Rembrandt’s The Night Watch is celebrated as one of his greatest achievements, depicting a militia preparing for action. However, a surprising discovery came to light during a 1947 restoration when a thick layer of soot was removed.
The painting, originally thought to be a nighttime scene, was actually set in broad daylight. The removal of the soot unveiled a much brighter and more dynamic scene, changing our understanding of Rembrandt’s masterpiece.
