A glimpse of tomorrow

In the peaceful village

By Mvoa loicPublished about a year ago 4 min read

In the peaceful village of Ashwood, time seemed to stand still. With its cobblestone streets and quaint cottages adorned with blooming flower boxes, it was a place where everyone knew each other, and the days flowed gently from one to the next. However, beneath this picturesque exterior, the villagers harbored a peculiar mystery—at the edge of town was an old clock tower that had long ceased to tick.

The clock tower stood tall and proud, its face frozen at three o'clock. Kids told tales of its magical past, claiming that it once possessed the ability to show glimpses of the future. But after a stormy night many decades ago, it had fallen silent, and with it, the dreams of the townsfolk were locked away.

Seventeen-year-old Ava had always been captivated by the clock tower, often staring at it from her window as if it were calling her name. The stories surrounding it sparked a yearning for adventure within her. One dreary afternoon, while rummaging through her grandmother's attic, she uncovered an old journal belonging to her grandmother, a keen clockmaker known for her intricate craftsmanship. As she flipped through the yellowed pages, one entry caught her attention:

**"The clock knows the secrets of time. If you listen closely, it can reveal what must come to pass."**

Intrigued, Ava felt an electrifying urge to uncover the truth about the clock tower. Gathering her courage, she decided to pay it a visit. As she made her way through the swirling leaves of autumn, the air crackling with energy, Ava reached the base of the tower. Moss and vines crept up its stone walls, but the once-grand entrance was cracked open slightly as if inviting her in.

Taking a deep breath, Ava pushed the door open and stepped inside. Dust motes danced in the shafts of light filtering through cracks in the walls. In the dim light, she spotted a staircase spiraling upward, each step creaking under her weight. Climbing higher, she could hear a faint ticking sound, like a heartbeat echoing in the stillness.

Finally, she reached the tower's clock room. The grand mechanism lay before her—its gears frozen but still majestic. A sense of awe washed over her as she approached the enormous clock face. To her surprise, a flicker of light emanated from the center, and suddenly, she felt a rush of energy pulse through her.

“What do you seek, Keeper of Time?” a voice echoed softly. Startled, Ava turned to see a figure materializing—a spectral, translucent woman adorned in ethereal garments, shimmering like starlight.

“Who are you?” Ava asked, her heart racing.

“I am Elara, the Guardian of the Clock Tower. Long ago, I was tasked with guiding the flow of time, but the storm that silenced this tower also bound my spirit. Now, I can only whisper to those who dare to listen,” she explained with a gentle smile.

Ava could hardly contain her excitement. “Can you show me the future?”

Elara’s eyes twinkled like distant galaxies. “The future is not set in stone, young one. It shifts with each choice made. However, I can offer you a glimpse of what may come if you wish to see.”

Ava nodded eagerly. “Yes, please!”

With a graceful wave of her hand, Elara summoned images within the clock’s face. The dials began spinning, and suddenly, visions of life in Ashwood unfolded before Ava's eyes. She saw her friends, some pursuing ambitious careers, others starting families or embarking on journeys far beyond their picturesque town.

But then, the visions darkened, revealing a glimpse of despair: the village struggling, the fields barren, and the joy of its inhabitants fading. Ava gasped, feeling the weight of her responsibility in those uncertain futures.

“What did I just witness?” she whispered, her heart heavy.

“Your village stands at a crossroads, dear Ava,” Elara replied. “There is power in unity, in the choices made by each soul. To prevent the darkness, the villagers must come together to nurture their dreams and support one another.”

Ava felt a surge of determination rise within her. “I will help them! I’ll organize a community gathering, a festival to remind everyone of the bonds we share.”

Elara's smile grew wider, revealing the hope that resided in her heart. “Remember, Keeper of Time, every small action has the potential to shape the future. Your spirit will ripple through time.”

With a flutter of her fingers, the images faded, and Ava found herself alone in the clock tower once more. Time seemed to have returned to its natural flow. The gears now ticked steadily, pulsing like a heartbeat, as if the clock tower had awakened from its long slumber.

Ava rushed back to the village, where she poured her heart into organizing a festival. She reached out to neighbors, friends, and families, reminding them of their shared stories and dreams. The festival day arrived, bustling with laughter, games, and music that echoed into the twilight. Villagers shared their talents—baking, crafting, storytelling, and more—reviving the spirit of community in a way that had been lost for far too long.

As dusk settled over Ashwood, the beauty of the village glimmered like the stars above. Before she knew it, the townsfolk gathered around the clock tower, its face still in motion, emitting a warm glow as if acknowledging the revival of hope.

Ava knew the clock tower would not just mark time; it would be a symbol of the choices they made together. From that day forward, the villagers embraced the potential of their community, cultivating dreams and nurturing connections, all while keeping watch over the clock that whispered of tomorrow.

And in the heart of the tower, Elara smiled, forever grateful to her new Keeper of Time.
