10-15 Minute Shadow Box

Mini Project Idea

By Rowan Finley Published about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read

The other evening my mom had an idea to give my daughter (age nine) and I several random objects that we were to use in order to make a creative shadowbox. Part of the parameters was that we had to use every object given to us. We also only had a maximum of 15 minutes to complete the project. It was a fun assignment!

The picture above is the one that I finished. It was very therapeutic and enjoyable to see, how seemingly random, pieces can fit together. Also, the objects can really symbolize a lot of different things in your life. The joy scrabble pieces represent the joy that we seek and experience in life. The soldier represents the battle that we fight in this life, day by day.

“Let the New Begin” by CHPTRS has been a really important song over the last couple years for me. The song is special, as I’ve been in transitioning and learning from different seasons of those life experiences. This ties nicely in with the fall leaf on the left side, which also symbolizes things that fall away but they are still beautiful in a way. The key that is hanging from the button is very symbolic because it reminds me of unlocking potential for future goals and dreams ahead. The bottom section represents the ocean, which is symbolic of freedom, calm and happy places to run to. I recently went to Cocoa beach in Florida and it was a beautiful place to explore and feel the powerful waves rush over my body.

Overall, this simple project was very fun and thought provoking. I encourage you to try this project and see what you come up with. Try not to overthink it. Just act. Ask a friend or family member to search for the random objects. Use every object and just see what unfolds. You could keep it, or give it to a friend who may like having something like this. If you make your own shadow box, let me know what you came up with in the comment section below. Get creative peeps! 🙃
