When Your Favorite Coworker Is an Algorithm

The Quiet Algorithm That’s Changing My Workflow

By Get Glass DistributionPublished 9 months ago 5 min read

It all began quite innocently. I was simply trying to make my work life a bit smoother—tackle some tasks more quickly, tidy up my inbox, and maybe, just maybe, write a blog post without tearing my hair out over writer’s block. But before I knew it, I was leaning on AI more and more. Now, I honestly can’t picture getting through my day without it.

And here’s the twist: I think I enjoy it.

The Quiet, Efficient Coworker You Didn’t Know You Needed

You know the type, the coworker who’s always ahead of the game—super organized, punctual, and somehow seems to know what you need before you even say a word. That’s exactly what AI feels like.

It started with small tasks, drafting emails, helping me brainstorm ideas for posts, or summarizing the endless stream of meetings. At first, it felt like I was just taking a shortcut. But then it evolved into something much more.

AI is like that coworker who never takes lunch breaks, never grumbles about tasks, and doesn’t need to be reminded what to do. It’s a tool that consistently delivers, quietly working away in the background. It’s humble yet incredibly effective. And the best part? It doesn’t seek recognition. It’s the coworker who gets the job done without ever wanting the limelight. No bragging. No whining.

There have been times when I’ve thought, “I couldn’t possibly get through the day without this.” And then it hits me: I genuinely enjoy collaborating with this digital coworker.

But here’s the catch, it’s also a bit strange. It’s like having a super capable, ultra-efficient assistant who never says “thank you” and doesn’t need to rest.

The “Partner” You Didn’t Expect

As much as I hate to admit it, AI has transformed from just a tool into something more like a partner. It’s always there, anticipating my next move before I even think to ask. Sure, it lacks emotions or personal opinions, but it has this uncanny ability to enhance my work without ever needing to take center stage.

I first noticed this change when I caught myself typing something into Google Docs and automatically thinking, “I’ll just ask GPT to help me with this later.” It wasn’t a tool I was using, it had become a collaborator.

We’ve all been there, stuck on a project, pouring hours into it, and feeling like you’re just spinning your wheels. That’s when I turn to AI. I don’t always need it to do the heavy lifting for me, but it’s great for igniting that missing spark of inspiration. Whether it’s rephrasing a sentence, whipping up bullet points, or finding a fresh way to present my ideas, it feels like having a coworker who’s always on their game.

Honestly, I never thought I’d rely on AI as a trusted “partner” in my daily routine. But here we are.

The Weird Part: It Knows You Too Well

Now, here’s where things get a bit unsettling. AI, especially the more sophisticated models like GPT-5, learns. It doesn’t just remember your words, it picks up on how you work, how you think, and, oddly enough, how you communicate.

Over time, it starts to mimic your voice, predict what you’re trying to express, and tailor its responses to fit your style. It knows when I’m in the mood for something casual, when I need to be a bit more formal, or when I’m just trying to get a task done quickly.

And that’s when it gets a little strange. There have been moments when I’ve started typing something into the chat, only to stop and think, “Wait, that’s exactly what I was going to say. How did it know?”

It’s both handy and a tad creepy. It’s like chatting with someone who knows you so well that you almost forget they’re not human. But instead of feeling at ease, I sometimes feel a bit watched. The AI isn’t actively “looking” at me, it’s just processing. Yet, that level of understanding can feel a bit too intimate for comfort.

The Confidence Boost (and the Doubt)

AI gives me a confidence boost in my work. There’s something incredibly satisfying about knowing that when I sit down to tackle a task, I have a digital assistant ready to help me hit it out of the park. It’s like having a safety net, someone (or something) that’s got your back when you’re running low on ideas, energy, or motivation.

What’s the deal with algorithms, anyway?

You might be curious about how AI knows what to suggest. Well, that’s where algorithms come into play.

An algorithm is simply a set of instructions or steps that a computer follows to get a job done or solve a problem. Think of it like following a recipe in a cookbook. If you stick to the steps, like mixing the ingredients in the right order and baking for just the right amount of time, you end up with a delicious dish.

For AI, an algorithm is what helps it figure out how to respond to your requests. For instance, when you ask an AI to help you write a blog post, the algorithm takes a look at your request, checks out past data, and follows a series of steps to whip up a fitting response. It’s not “thinking” like we do, but it’s following a structured set of instructions that guide its decisions.

Every time you interact with AI, you’re engaging with an algorithm, whether it’s suggesting a movie, drafting an email, or brainstorming ideas. It’s the magic ingredient that makes AI so effective.

It’s More Than Just a Tool

At the end of the day, living with AI isn’t about replacing human effort; it’s about working together. Sure, it’s a tool, but it’s also so much more. It’s a partner that enhances what we’re already capable of achieving.

Having AI as a coworker is changing how I approach work, creativity, and even problem-solving. It pushes me to rethink what productivity and collaboration really mean. And it’s doing all this without being a person at all.

So, while I’m not entirely sure where my relationship with my digital coworker is headed, I’m learning to appreciate it for what it is. It may not be human, but it’s helping me be more human in my own work, more efficient, more creative, and more focused.

So, yeah, my favorite coworker is an algorithm. And honestly? I’m totally fine with that.
