On-page, SEO often called on-site optimization is the practice of optimizing individual web pages. So they rank higher and receive more visits from people searching on Google.

This guide will show you how to optimize your web pages for Google through the use of keyword research, title tags, meta descriptions, header tags, image optimization, and internal linking. By following these tips, you can improve your website’s rank and visibility on Google, bringing in more visitors who are interested in what you have to offer.

On-page optimization can be broken down into four main categories of techniques. That you can use to improve your rankings in both organic and paid search results: on-page content, on-page URLs, on-page keywords, and on-page code quality.

To prepare your site for On-Page SEO optimization, do some basic general setups first.

Step 1 – Install Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free web analysis tool. It offers in-depth analysis of websites and their visitors as well as on-page optimization suggestions and actionable advice to drive more traffic. These are often overlooked but essential aspects of search engine optimization (SEO). Because analytics provides you with important information such as

Step 2 – Install Google Search Console

Google Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools) is a no-brainer for any site that uses Google to drive traffic. Learn how to set it up, and make sure you’re doing what you can to ensure your site is indexed by Google. It’s also a great way to keep track of your backlinks (and figure out who has been linking to you). If you don’t already have Search Console installed on your website, install it today.

Bing Webmaster Tools, Google Webmaster Tools, and Yahoo! Site Explorer (if you’re a Yahoo! user) are free search engine optimization(SEO) tools you can use to monitor your site. It only takes a few minutes to set up. If you’re not currently using one of these tools, it may be time to do so. For on-page SEO optimization purposes, make sure your site is verified and set up properly by using one of these free tools.

Step 3 – Install an SEO plugin

Yoast SEO

Yoast SEO is Word Press Plugin. One of the most popular on-page SEO tools. Installing it is pretty simple. To get started:

In your WordPress admin panel, select Plugins > Add New > Search plugins. Type in Yoast to search for it, and then select Install Now to install it on your site. After it’s installed, activate it.

You’ll be prompted to enter your API key from Google or Bing Webmaster Tools; do so and continue through any other prompts that appear (most likely).

That’s all there is to installing Yoast SEO!

When you go into its settings—found under SEO > General—you can customize how your posts are displayed on search engines based on title tags, meta descriptions, metadata, sitemaps, and more.

Step 4 – Create and submit an XML sitemap to indexed in Google

This is a necessary action for search engines to index all of your site’s pages. In addition, XML sitemaps provide search engine crawlers with valuable information about what content is available on your site.

Simply creating an XML sitemap isn’t enough though – you also need to submit it to Google using Google Webmaster Tools or any other service that allows you to submit an XML sitemap (for example, Yahoo! Web Services).

Step 5 – Make sure your site loads fast

Research suggests that a page loading under two seconds will rank better than those over three seconds. Make sure to optimize your images, scripts, and web fonts by compressing them with tools like TinyPNG or YUI Compressor.

It’s also a good idea to make sure your site loads quickly on mobile devices, as more and more users are using smartphones to search for local companies.

Now that your site is set up for On-Page SEO Checklist optimization, it’s time to put in SEO work.

Keyword Search: To Find Keywords use Google Keyword Planner

Google Keyword Planner is your go-to tool for finding keywords. It’s a Google product, so it’s free and easy to use. Just enter two or three seed words into KWP and click on keyword ideas (some might call them to search queries). Once you have some options in front of you, add all of them to a spreadsheet (you can do that from within Keyword Planner). This helps you analyze volume across different search engines as well as estimate search volumes for various types of queries:

  1. Head term vs. long tail
  2. Single word vs. phrase
  3. Broad match vs. modified broad match.

1 – On-Page Meta Tag Optimization

The very first step in your on-page SEO journey is meta tag optimization. Begin by editing each page’s metadata (including title, description, and keywords). Your keyword should be included in each page’s title, meta description, and a few times throughout its body content. Remember to stay relevant to your target audience.

Although it is tempting to use excessive keywords for search engine optimization purposes, you may end up alienating your users. Remember that most search engines now incorporate user experience into their ranking algorithms.

2 – Keyword Optimized Title Tags

Set a target keyword, and then include it in your title tags. Although Google’s Hummingbird update has rendered keyword stuffing obsolete, an optimized title tag can still be a valuable tool for those ranking high in competitive niches.

In addition to placing your target keyword(s) at or near the beginning of your titles, you should also include one or two secondary keywords that are semantically related to your primary focus.

3 – Meta Description Tags

Think of your meta description tags as a tweet or a summary that tells readers what your page is about. Although these descriptions do not directly influence search engine rankings, they are used by Google and other search engines to display snippets for searchers. In other words, meta descriptions can have an indirect effect on how many people click on your site in search results. Make sure you use them well and ensure they are consistent with your targeted keywords and phrases.

4 – Limit Meta Description to 160 Characters

Meta descriptions are critical for on-page SEO optimization. Make sure your meta description is less than 160 characters. This way you can properly describe your page and entice users to click on it!

5 – Include Keyword in Meta Description

Make sure that your page has a meta description that includes your keyword. This is one of those little things you can do to help drive traffic to your site.

6 – Use an H1 Title of 65 Characters or Less

The length of your title is one of many on-page factors. That contributes to where your page will rank in Google and other search engines. Use no more than 65 characters, including spaces and punctuation,

7 – Include Keyword In Your H1 Heading (Your Main Article Title)

Make sure to include your target keyword in your post’s H1 tag to help your content rank for relevant search terms.

Your H1 header tag is one of your most important on-page SEO factors. The keyword or phrase that you choose for your H1 header tag should be a generic phrase that is related to your target audience and what they may type into Google when searching for content like yours. For example, let’s say we’re writing an ebook on weight loss. We would want our title to contain words like losing weight or weight loss diet plan, etc… Instead of something along the lines of Discover How To Lose 10 Pounds (which doesn’t tell anyone how to lose 10 pounds). There are exceptions to every rule but in general, it’s best practice to include at least 2 keywords in your header tags.

8 – Include Keyword in Subheading at Least Once

Include your target keyword or phrase in both your H1 and H2 tags. These are often used by web crawlers to determine whether or not a page is relevant to a user’s search query, so using them (even once) on each page is an effective way to indicate that you have relevant content.

9 – Include Keyword in the First Paragraph or Introduction

The first step in on-page optimization is to put your target keyword in your title and your first paragraph. This signals search engines that your post is relevant to a user’s query. If you don’t include your keyword in these places, chances are you won’t rank for anything.

The content of your page should be descriptive enough to warrant a visitor clicking on it. But it should also include keywords that can help you rank higher in search results. By including your keyword(s) into your first paragraph, you’re maximizing your chance for views (and for clicks). Make sure it’s placed well into each section.

10 – Focus on Keyword Density (How Many Times Should You Use a Keyword?)

On-page optimization begins with keyword density. To effectively optimize a web page for search engines, we need to use keywords that are relevant to our site’s topic in a natural way. This means using them often enough so that search engines understand what your site is about. But not overusing them in a way that makes your content seem spammy. There is no exact formula for how many times you should repeat a keyword on a single web page. That number depends on each particular niche.

When choosing your image file name, don’t just choose a random number or string of letters. Make sure you include your keyword in the image file name before you upload it. ( Google looks at this as well!)

13 – Header Tags(h1, h2, h3, etc.)

Every page of your website should contain header tags (h1, h2, h3, etc.). The number of different header tags on each page should be limited to 3 or fewer. These header tags represent sub-pages within your website and can help search engines better index and understand the content on your site. They’re also great for readers—and their inclusion is one of Google’s latest recommendations.

14 – Include Keyword in URL

It’s important to make sure your URL includes the keyword you want to target. For example, if you want to target the keyword SEO, you should make sure SEO is in your URL. As you can see in the address at the top of your screen, you can find it in our blog post.

Make sure to take care of permalinks that have the focus keyword.

15 – Use an SEO-Friendly URL

The first and easiest way to optimize on-page SEO is to use an SEO-friendly URL. For example, we can take your website’s home page (say it was called /HTML/home) and change it to /HTML/SEO/checklist. In addition to offering a more friendly human URL, search engines will also rank pages based on keywords that are in their URLs.

16 – Using Internal Links (Internal Links Are Valuable!)

Include at least one internal link on your page. Internal links are inbound links that point to another page on your website, and they’re a great way to show Google that all of your content is connected. This makes you look more trustworthy and authoritative.

According to Google, 100 is the maximum number of internal links that will be crawled, and having too many links too often sends up red flags for the search engine

17 – Include Internal Links Early in Your Post

Minimize your bounce rate (or the percentage of visitors who leave your site after viewing only one page) by including internal links early in your posts. This ensures that even if they don’t want to stay on the current page. They may instead click on another one of your pages rather than abandoning the site entirely.

18 -Include Backlinks From Industry Influencers/Competitors

If your site has a backlink profile, you’ll be able to see a list of sites that have links pointing to your pages. There are important industry influencers or competitors on that list, reach out and ask them. If they would consider adding a link back to your site in exchange for something relevant.

19 -Use Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) Keywords

Using latent semantic indexing (LSI) keywords in your post’s body is an effective way to optimize on-page SEO. In case you aren’t familiar with LSI keywords, they are keywords that are not explicitly mentioned but are implied by other words in a sentence.

It may seem strange to think of keywords in terms of Latent Semantic Indexing, but it’s a helpful framework for optimizing your site. LSI keywords are synonyms. And synonyms are great for on-page SEO because they’re words that have similar meaning or context.
