The young man says that he ordered the food through the website of a leading foreign fast food chain. The website showed an 'offer' price of Dh37 when he chose burgers, soft drinks and a doll with the restaurant's logo on it.

Dubai: While trying to order food online, a young man fell victim to cyber fraud and lost a huge amount of money. An expatriate living in Dubai revealed his ordeal to serve as a lesson to others. He ordered food for 37 dirhams and lost 4848 dirhams. But there was no food.
The young man says that he ordered the food through the website of a leading foreign fast food chain. The website showed an 'offer' price of Dh37 when he chose burgers, soft drinks and a doll with the restaurant's logo on it. The site also informed that it is available at such a low price because of the huge discount. But after entering all the card details to pay, when the OTP was given, 4848 dirhams were withdrawn from the account.
On June 26, he received a pop-up message. Being a regular user of a leading fast food restaurant chain, you will get a 50 percent discount for one day only. Thinking that it was a good offer, he was informed that the total amount to be paid was 37 dirhams. OTP was received when the card details were given. After paying this, instead of 37 dirhams, 4848 dirhams left the account. There was no food.
Immediately filed a complaint with the police and the bank. It was realized that a fake website was created to look like the real website of a fast food company and its link was sent in the name of offers. The transaction amount was recorded along with the OTP received for confirmation of payment but it was not noticed. Authorities often warn to be vigilant against such scams.
Such gangs collect the card information given by the customers and use it to extort money. URL (website address) should be checked before making financial transactions and transferring information through websites. It is advisable not to visit such sites through links from unknown sources.
Websites with typos and grammatical errors are often fake. Experts say that websites that provide a special link for payment, payment IDs that do not specify name or other details, and messages asking for immediate payment are all situations where fraud can be suspected.
Online food delivery platforms are witnessing huge growth in India. Every day, millions of people order their favorite food online. Many apps like Zomato and Swiggy are involved in the food delivery business.
The central government's new platform is focusing on this one area. It is a food delivery platform based on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) system. It allows restaurants to sell food and other products directly to customers. Although the platform has been operating since September 2022, it has only recently gained traction. According to new reports, ONDC receives more than 10,000 orders per day.
Many people are sharing social media posts comparing prices on ONDC and other food delivery apps. Compared to leading private food delivery apps in the country, the prices on ONDC are relatively low.
What is ONDC?
ONDC stands for Open Network for Digital Commerce. It is a platform developed by the central government. This app can be used by restaurants. Restaurants can deliver food directly to customers through ONDC.
Apart from food, grocery items, home decoration items, cleaning products etc. can also be bought through this platform. The functionality is similar to Swiggy's apps like Instagram, Septo and Blinkit.

Products sold through any other e-commerce platform can also be purchased through ONDC. This is possible through an open and interoperable network. Here buyers and sellers can make transactions without coming to the same platform.
Unified Payment Interface type protocol is used in ONDC. The aim of the app is to help small retailers break the monopoly of large technology companies. Through this, retailers will be able to grow their business in an area that is important to the big players. Services through this app are currently available in many cities.
