Beyond the beer tents and traditional German clothing, discover the hidden treasures of Oktoberfest. From excellent traditions to exciting shows, Oktoberfest has many lesser-known fun activities that you should be aware of. From amusement parks to puppet shows and expressing your creativity in Oktoberfest posters, there is a lot that you can do as a family.

Amusement Rides At Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is for all, and it is incomplete without having fun! Amusement parks are a great source of entertainment, and Oktoberfest offers the best options.

The Willenborg Ferris wheel

Since 1979, The Willenborg Ferris Wheel, a symbol of Oktoberfest, has been the highlight in Munich. If not the largest, it is one of its kind to let you experience the beautiful view.

What Makes Ferris Wheel Special

The Ferris Wheel has a space to accommodate 400 people at a time in its 40 gondolas, with up to 10 persons each. While riding in a 50-meter-high Ferris Wheel that stretches over the entire Theresien from Bavaria, you can see the Oktoberfest beer tents, stalls, and other Oktoberfest attractions from the sparkling sea lights on clear days. Take it as witnessing the mesmerizing view, which can be your once-in-a-year kind of thing.

Riding Tips

  • The giant wheel is suitable for all age groups. However, a few tips can help you have a safe ride.
  • There is always room for wheelchairs and pushchairs; ask for help from the on-duty staff.
  • The gondolas are well-designed, so you won't get wet on rainy days. All you need is to stay calm.
  • Experiencing long queues will take less time as there are 40 gondolas, and you will get a seat.
  • Take your phones or cameras along on the ride.

The Olympia Looping (Five Loops)

Imagine the rush as you roll over not once, not twice, but an incredible five times – a feat that makes this rollercoaster the largest transportable one globally and the sole ride of its kind, offering such a hair-raising experience.

In 1978, when the roller coaster came into existence, and a year later (1989), it doubled to two sections (Upside-down), standing tall, beckoning adrenaline enthusiasts.

Olympia Looping: What makes it unique?

A 1,250-meter journey of pure exhilaration with five loops that defy gravity. Its speeds reach 100 km/h, ensuring an adrenaline-packed ride for you. It can also accommodate 20 to 28 thrill-seekers at a time.

Riding Tips

  • Aim for a seat in the front of the first car for the most intense experience.
  • The ride reaches up to 5.2 g's, so brace yourself and try to relax through the intense moments.
  • Ensure all loose items like hats, glasses, and phones are secured or stored away.
  • Cameras, of course!

The Museum Tent

Immerse yourself in the nostalgia of the Munich Show Jumping Carousel from 1945, a Velodrome replica, and the iconic Stork caravan from 1952/53, once the hub of the Oktoberfest press office. There's a tapestry of history waiting to be explored.

Entertainment for Children

  • For young adventurers, the Museum Tent offers a vibrant children's program from 11 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday.
  • Witness the magic of face painting and balloon artistry and explore the dialects.
  • Kids can spin around on crazy bikes inside the velodrome, adding an extra layer of excitement.
  • Engage in a search game at the Oide Wiesn.

Museum Tent Speciality

The Museum Tent invites school classes for an educational experience about Bavarian showmanship.

Free Admission For All: Open from 10 am to 11.30 pm.

Oktoberfest Motif Contest

Since 1975, Oktoberfest has been hosting the "Oktoberfest Motif Contest" and welcomes artist-minded people to participate. The purpose behind organizing the contest is to get a design for merchandising and other licensed products, such as Oktoberfest posters. These specially designed motives are also used on Beer Mugs.

Submit PDF/X files following the defined parameters to participate in the Oktoberfest Motif Contest. While designing the motif for the Oktoberfest contest, make sure your design boldly reflects the authentic flair of the traditional festival, i.e., Oktoberfest. Don't forget to add the correct watermark, "Oktoberfest München + date". The watermark motifs are already decided; any other version of these designs is unacceptable.

If you are working as a team, remember that one design is accepted with one entry. Design evaluation will be done online; only one vote can be cast against one design. There is a prize money for the winner: 1st prize EUR 2,500, 2nd prize EUR 1,250, 3rd prize EUR 500.

Did you know that the selection of posters for Oktoberfest motif 2024 has already been closed?

Graphic designer Annika Mittelmeier from Munich holds the first position. The winning design embodies tradition and modernity simultaneously and is highly appreciated by the Oktoberfest poster jury.

Munich's Puppet Theater

Josef Leonhard Schmid established the theater in 1858. The theater's origins trace back to a visionary quest for a permanent puppet theater for children. Recently active in Blumenstrasse, the theater offers a diversified selection of programs for both young and adults. The theater "Travels for Oide Wiesn" typically shows the rich history of the people of Munich.

Dress in your authentic Dirndl, Lederhosen or Bundhosen and enjoy multiple puppet shows daily, showcasing the artistry and magic of puppetry that has stood the test of time.

Free Entry: An open invitation to experience the wonder and charm.

Conclusion

Oktoberfest holds many activities when it comes to unfolding the lesser-known festivities. Beyond offering beer tents, there are many other activities that you as a family can enjoy, from visiting amusement parks and riding a five-loop roller coaster to Skyfall; there is much more.
