Meet Valentine, xAI’s new humanoid robot and other tech news
Tech news in a nutshell: week 15-20 July, 2025

Tech News in a Nutshell highlights the best and latest stories on AI and robotics.
1.Meet Valentine, xAI’s humanoid robot
Elon Musk’ AI company xAI has revealed it is building a humanoid robot named Valentine. The prototype is being developed by a robotics team in collaboration with Figure AI, with a specific goal: to make a robot that “talks like ChatGPT, walks like Boston Dynamics, and works like a Tesla.”
Valentine was named after the protagonist in American science fiction writer and aeronautical engineer Robert Heinlein’s novel “Stranger in a Strange Land.”
“Our AI’s name, ‘Grok,’ was born in this novel, and Grok means to understand something deeply and empathetically,” wrote Musk on X.
Valentine will use Grok, xAI’s conversational model, giving it a quirky Musk-ish personality. The robot aims to perform household and industrial tasks, something like warehouse work today, general-purpose utility later.
Musk, who posted about Valentine on X, hinted it could be integrated into Tesla factories, creating a “robotic workforce that learns on the job.”
We are now in the “AI goes bipedal” era. Valentine might be a name, but the honeymoon phase for humanoid robots is about to get real.
2. GPT-5 rumors heat up (again)
OpenAI is reportedly giving select enterprise partners early access to GPT5. While details remain under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), users say it’s “sharper, faster, more reliable,” and includes stronger tool use and longer memory.
This could mark a significant leap in enterprise automation, from legal research to data analysis. And yes, it might finally understand your weird Excel macros.
3. Boston Dynamics’ robot dog now has better manners
Spot, the famous robot dog from Boston Dynamics, now has an emotion-sensing module powered by Generative AI. It can read human facial expressions, tone, and even suggest conversational responses.
This isn’t just about cuteness, it’s about safety and collaboration in human-robot workplaces. A robot that knows when you’re frustrated might not hand you a drill.
4. Worldcoin robots begin ID scanning in South America
OpenAI Sam Altman’s Worldcoin project has launched new AI-powered ID verification kiosks in Brazil and Argentina, with humanoid agents guiding users through biometric sign-up.
This merges robotics and crypto in a real-world rollout. Advocates say it’s about financial inclusion; critics say it’s a surveillance dystopia with a smiling faceplate.
5. Japan’s robo-caregivers pass empathy test
A Japanese startup unveiled a carebot named Mimi that passed a soft Turing test for emotional empathy, responding to elderly users with context-aware conversation and physical cues such as nodding and touch.
I think this is a good move and a good application for AI-embedded robots. Why? Because Japan’s aging population needs 1 million caregivers by 2030. Robots like Mimi could close the gap if users can accept metal hands with warm intentions. This could trigger some philosophical and ethical ethical questions and even question the definition of being empathic and who can be called an empathic being. Being human doesn’t guarantee everyone is or can be an empathic carer, you know. Countless examples support this statement.
Until next time, stay curious, stay weird, stay informed, always ask ‘why,’ and don’t let the robot vacuum unionise.

I actually read this about seven hours ago - but duty called (mom) and I lost the detailed comment I wrote out. Thank you for the research and updates. I am most excited about #2.
I really like the dog robot and the carebot. I feel they'll be beneficial
This was clever with just the right amount of snark. Loved it!
Nice one
