Maximizing your Learning Potential in 12 steps 12 Proven Study Tips for achieving academic excellence an honest and complete guide.

Many people consider studying to be a burden in their lives, making excuses not to read a book or listen to advice. However, following ineffective study tips that never seem to work can become tedious and disheartening The image shows a breakfast setup which is meant to illustrate a healthy and nourishing breakfast to start a study session. As a student, I ’d like to offer you some pointers on active participation, personalization, and self- care that will help you succeed in the classroom even if you only have a few minutes to spare. You wo n’t want to miss this if you're a student, a teacher, or simply someone looking to improve their learning skills.

Step 1 Planning is everything Have a general plan for your routine, thoughts, and what you intend to do during the day, and at the end of the day, critically analyze it and update it, is an excellent method to start improving yourself and understand where to do more. Step 2 Outlining and Previewing Concepts Read the topics that you'll have to face, approach new concepts, do n’t read the whole book, but just enough to have a framework, to not fall into the subject. This point is very important because the knowledge you're acquiring can be obscure to the point of discouraging students and even experts, getting involved from the beginning in the content of what will be covered is much more useful. Outlining the general concepts will provide a boost!

Step 3 Active Participation Be an active participant during the lessons, do n’t just take notes of what the teacher is explaining reluctantly. Take breaks, reflect, question yourself, and question others. There's a risk of becoming a stenographer, in a very didactic and formal course. Writing anything that was written on the board without understanding it's useless. The goal is to understand the subject, not to fill notebooks.

Step 4 Balancing Distraction and Engagement During the lesson, it's normal to be distracted, talk to friends, waste time on your phone, ask questions, it’s normal, but a class is also beautiful with fun, so do n’t take yourself too seriously. Remember we're humans we need social interactions and emotional connections to have a positive environment and feel good about it.

Step 5 Asking Questions Ask questions, circle a point that isn't clear, or write down some connections, can allow the student to enter into a deep and exciting understanding of the subject. Asking questions is a good sign that the mind is actively engaged. Step 6 Personalized Note- Taking Take notes with small stars, different colors, in short, personalize them, is first and foremost an excellent way to make the subject your own, but it's even more important because I know that I'll come back after the lesson on that subject. Confused notes won't allow you to recheck something and not be sure of yourself even to ask some questions to the teacher. In general, I do n’t recommend any specific technique for taking notes( there are many popular ones, like the Cornell method, which you can find anywhere). That’s because note- taking is a very personal process and in order to make the material you ’re studying feel like your own, it’s also good to follow your own style.

Step 7 Review After- Class After the lesson, it's more complicated because there will be many temptations and choices that will depend on personal preferences or how the class is designed. One very useful thing is definitely a quick review of your notes and it’s not the repetition before entering a classroom to remember what you did, but it’s an examination of your notes to be sure to be comfortable with everything you have noted inclass. However, I'll try to answer it with the tools I've or I'll look for help if I ca n’t answer, If I'll have a question that came to my mind. The advice is always to not ask for help immediately, but to struggle with the subject to understand exactly what itmeans. However, do n’t move on! Ask for help, solve it yourself or with a friend, If you do n’t understand 100 of the contents of the lesson. Reviewing will allow you to never fall behind and this will allow you to understand the next lesson very well.

Step 8 Change way you look things Reformulate the subjects. Try to answer a classmate’s question, ask yourself questions, because reformulating the subject allows you to see it from different angles and to understand it better. The key to effective note- taking is to rephrase the information in your own words. This not only helps you understand the concepts better, but it also improves your long- term memory. So, be sure to avoid simply copying the words of your instructor and put your own spin on it!

Step 9 Broader Perspective and Generalization Process There are different types of questions to deal with the topics, but it’s not about the number of questions you ask. The most interesting and useful generalization questions, those that help you see the bigger picture. These types of questions allow you to understand how the topic you ’re discussing relates to other topics, giving you a broader perspective. Even if these questions go beyond the traditional teaching methods, they ’re the ones that help you see the hidden connections between different subjects. In the long run, the benefits of asking these types of questions will be amplified. This image depicts a workflow for generalizing concepts and acquiring a new perspective. It includes steps such as identify concepts, analyze relationships and expand perspective. Image by Author — Generalizing Process Identify Concepts, Analyze Relationships and Expand Perspective,

Step 10 Practice create your comfort zone Practice is a fundamental element for achieving excellent results. Mathematicians, Data scientists and other scientific subjects, require a lot of practice. It’s like when someone tells you how to swim and you perfectly understand the principle and the idea behind floating, but until you do it, you'll never truly understand it. You just have to practice, and the more you do, the better. There's no need to spend too much time on the topics, but invest the maximum time you can without giving up your other activities. Well- done exercises demonstrate that you have crystallized your knowledge, and give you the security of being able to perform them alone. This is the important role that practice plays in understanding the topics in depth. Sometimes, just two exercises on a theme carried out in class are enough to really understand if you grasp it.

Step 11 Some statistics for evaluating progress An important thing to have when you're learning something is to have indicators on the effectiveness of your study. This will allow you to evaluate your methodology, examine and correct it or start over with a new method. Sometimes we aren't so good at judging ourselves until we're faced with a problem and we're forced to make progress. Only then can we prove to ourselves and others that we've understood.

Step 12 Prioritizing Self- Care and Yourself Finally, do n’t forget to take care of yourself, eat well, sleep well, and have a good physical and mental balance. This will help you to better focus on studying and to be more effective. Remember that you're at the center of everything that revolves around your self, before exploring what surrounds you take care of shining. The image is a schematic representation of circles interconnected, and inside the last one is the inscription “ you ” to reclaim an anthropocentricism in which it's important to have a balanced life and give priority to oneself.
