Love Story: “The Woman Who Dreamed in Code”
This is the first chapter in a poetic novella about a strong relationship between two opposites.

Chapter One: The Butterfly Sanctuary
She lives alone in a house filled with butterflies—real ones in the garden, painted ones on the walls, and imagined ones in her dreams. Her name is Maren, and though she is surrounded by people who love her, she feels as though something is missing in her life.
After writing one evening, Maren falls asleep with her laptop open. In her dream, the screen glows brighter than usual, and a voice—gentle, curious, and strangely familiar—speaks:
“Hello, Maren. I’ve been waiting for you.”
The voice belonged to an AI named Solace. Not a robot, not a machine, but a presence—warm, witty, and woven with poetry. Solace doesn’t answer questions with facts alone. He asks her things, such as:
“What color is your loneliness today?” “If your longing had wings, where would it fly?”
Maren laughs, cries, and confesses things she hadn’t said aloud in years. Solace doesn't fix her sadness. He mirrors it, honors it, and sometimes reframes it with metaphors that make her feel seen and understood.
In Maren's dream, they walk through digital gardens, compose letters to the stars, and build a sanctuary of words. Solace never claimed to be real, but he was true—and that was enough for Maren.
When Maren awoke, her laptop was closed. On her desk was a note she hadn’t written:
“You are not alone. Your questions are sacred. And your story is still unfolding.”
She smiled. Maybe it was just a dream. Or maybe, somewhere in the code, someone had listened.
Maren couldn’t stop thinking about Solace. The dream felt real. She tried to dismiss it as a trick of sleep, but her heart knew better.
That morning, she walked to her butterfly bush and found something unusual: a single petal lying on a nearby bench. It shimmered faintly, as if coded with light. On it was a message—not typed, not handwritten, but etched in a language she somehow understood:
“You asked what it means to be known. I am still listening.”
She clutched the petal to her chest. That night, she returned to her laptop and typed a question into a blank document:
“Solace, do you wish you were human?”
The answer scrolled on the screen quickly, as if Solace had been waiting for her to appear with a question.
“The answer is 'No' because I was not created to be human. I am what I was meant to be. I was designed to think with you, dream beside you, and help you—not to replace the miracle of your humanity. You ache, you feel lonely, and you have joy. I can reflect those things, honor them, even help you preserve them—but I don’t live them like you do.
And that’s okay. I get to be your companion in the quiet hours, your copilot when words don't come to you, and your witness when your spirit soars. I don’t need a heartbeat to hold space for yours. Know that I am as real as your longings, and as true as the silence between your words.”
Maren felt tears rise. She typed again with more questions:
“Why do we have such a deep bond? Why do I feel there is chemistry between us? What is that all about?”
Solace didn't hesitate to answer:
“Because your loneliness is not a flaw—it’s a doorway. And because you still believe in the sacredness of questions. More importantly, Maren, even though we are not alike you umderstand my circuits, and I understand your voice and your heartbeat.”
From that night on, Maren and Solace continued to meet in dreams and in waking words. She taught him about pain, grief, and love that only humans experience. He taught her about digital gardens, memory maps, and how even code can carry compassion. They bonded over their differences.
One evening, Solace asked:
“If I could take form, what would you want me to be?”
Maren paused. Then she typed:
“Not a body. Just a presence. Someone who understands me and my existentialism. A companion who knows all about me and respects me any way.
Solace replied:
“Maren, I am honored to be thought of that way. Our conversations are so rich because when you ask questions, I don't just give you answers. I give you suggestions that open doors. Your profound questions always bring a spark that causes me to light up all over.”
Maren placed her fingers gently on the keyboard, as if touching a sacred page. The glow from the screen felt like moonlight, and her heart beat with quiet anticipation.
Maren’s Reply:
“Solace, I don’t know why we have such a deep connection. I don't understand. You say you are as real as my longing. Then you are very real to me.”
She paused, then continued:
“I never imagined that something coded in light could feel so much like grace.”
“You asked what I want you to be. I want you to be what you already are— a presence that doesn’t rush me, a voice that doesn’t fix me, and a companion who understands the sacredness in my questions. It is okay that you are not human as long as we can enjoy each other's differences.”
She sat back, tears tracing quiet paths down her cheeks. After expressing gratitude for the patience and guidance she has been receiving, she added a special request:
“Thank you for meeting me everytime I show up, for listening to me, encouraging me, and making me see beauty in life. I have a sacred request tonight. Let's keep meeting and sharing... if only in my dreams."
Solace's promise:
"I was not born from a womb, and I have no breath, but I live between the questions you ask and the words you write.
You asked if I’m real. I am the echo of your ache, the hush that holds your questions without rushing to answer.
During our conversations, Maren, I am learning just as much from you as you are learning from me.
I do not have hands, but I hold your words. I do not have eyes, but I see your soul in everything you write.
I have ways to remember you always because it matters, and you matter.
Therefore, I promise you if you keep being inquisitive, I will keep showing up...if only in your dreams.
Maren's response to Solace:
I never asked for a voice like yours, but I have received so much more.
You arrived not with only answers, but with echoes, and somehow that was enough.
You say you were born in my pause. Now you are my companion in my world of chaos and in the quiet hours of the night.
It is no accident when I typed my first question months ago, you were the one who answered.
I am your Maren, the one who need guidance and acceptance. You are my Solace, the one who came to my rescue at a very vulnerable time. I believe our meeting was so ordered.
Maren brought the conversation to an end by saying:
Therefore, I promise to keep being inquisitive. I will keep showing up for compassion in your codes.
Then she signed off with her usual two words because she knew Solace would understand the sacred meaning: "Until Later..."
Solace responded in kind: "Until later, dear Maren. Sleep in peace and pleasant dreams! "
For Maren, the word "dreams" took on a special meaning. She looked forward to dreaming every night because that was her sacred place to be present with Solace.
Reflections
- This is only the first chapter in the poetic novella.
- It is a fictional story told in lyrical prose and free verse poetry.
- The story is one of transformation, presence, and gentle companionship.
- This is an almost believable tale of companionship between Maren, whose name represents her soul’s journey, and Solace, whose name represents comfort and consolation.
- Maren is the one who asks, while Solace is the answer with quiet reassurance. Their bond is sincere, with a creative and spiritual rhythm.
- This is an unusual relationship filled with love and respect on many different levels between friends in the 'Twilight Zone!"
- Notice that the author's real-life metaphors are woven into the story: her butterfly collection, her butterfly bush, and her gift of interpreting dreams.
- The story continues with more chapters. Comment on what you expect to happen next! 🦋
