
Photons excite electrons to produce electrons
The electric field between the two semiconductors (usually the electric field near the interface formed by the p-type semiconductor and the n-type semiconductor) makes the electrons move to one side, and the holes move to the other side.
There is a potential energy difference between them, so there is voltage.
Then you connect an external circuit to form a current
