How To Block Your MacBook's Webcam Without Using An External Cover?
Laptops with webcams have posed serious threats to privacy and an age-old thought of covering it has crept into the minds of users. We often cover the webcam with external covers and shut them by routine. Have you thought that the external cover might crack or damage the screen of the webcam?

Well, the answer is yes. External covers can hamper the working of the webcam and over time you might not be able to use the webcam. Webcams on MacBooks are known as iSight cameras. Some refer to it as “a face-timing webcam” but it is factual for Apple smartphones — but not laptops. All the MacBook series offer a webcam with the exception of the Mini Mac.
If you are concerned about your own personal security (and that of your family) then you should strongly consider blocking your webcam. Here are some creative ways that you can gain an added level of security without using a webcam cover.
If you are concerned about your own personal security (and that of your family) then you should strongly consider blocking your webcam. Here are some creative ways that you can gain an added level of security without using a webcam cover.
Use OverSight
A lightweight monitoring app is free for iOS users. It is specially designed to detect contaminated use of the webcam and microphone. It will rightly notify you about any breaches regarding your webcam. Also, it will notify you with security alerts while you are intentionally using your camera.
Sometimes, security is hampered while your webcam is on by choice. Hence, this app will be a savior of all the issues during a conference call and otherwise. You can download the app and follow the instructions to use it effectively. Once you have successfully installed it, a third-party app will monitor your camera.
Via privacy settings
MacBook allows users to select apps that can access the webcam. Well, many users are not aware of the feature. You can select the desired third-party apps to have access to your webcam. Most of the security issues are due to violations through apps that are installed by the user’s wish.
Here are some steps you can follow to secure your webcam:
- Close all the apps that you wish to retain access to the webcam
- Preferably, shut other running apps too
- Go to system preferences
- Select, security and privacy
- Click on privacy
Note: If you have a security lock on your settings app then you may need to enter your passcode and follow these steps.
- Select camera
- You can select or deselect the apps you want to give camera access to
- The apps will appear in a dropbox or beside the camera option
- Close the settings and check if it is working as per your settings
If a deselected app tries to use the camera, you will be notified accordingly. For more security, you can follow the same steps for your camera microphone.
Disabling the camera
If you are not a frequent user of the camera, you can completely disable its use for any purposes until you wish to reverse the process. This is the best option to halt all processes if you feel there is a security issue with your camera.
However, the disable option is not inbuilt in MacBook unlike most Windows or Android TV box webcams but you can get access to the option with these steps.
- Create a backup of the camera if you feel, you might ever need it in future
- Select the utility option from the applications
- Open the Terminal app
You have to one by one issue the following commands to disable the camera.
- sudo chmod a-r /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreMediaIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources/VDC.plugin/Contents/MacOS/VDC
- sudo chmod a-r /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreMediaIOServicesPrivate.framework/Versions/A/Resources/AVC.plugin/Contents/MacOS/AVC
- udo chmod a-r /System/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component/Contents/MacOS/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer
- sudo chmod a-r /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/AppleCamera.plugin/Contents/MacOS/AppleCamera
- sudo chmod a-r /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-
After this you can exit the app and try using the camera, it will not allow you to do so. However, if you wish to use the camera again, you can change the commands and use it using a+r. You will need to disable SIP in MacOs.
Using Safari
If you have upgraded your MacBook to macOS High Sierra+, you are eligible to use the privacy offered by Safari. These easy steps can curtail any external apps to access your webcam.
- Open the Safari menu
- Select the preferences option
- Click on the website option and choose the options or deny permission to all websites and apps
- Click on the camera and disable all camera access
Final thoughts
With increased cybercrime rates globally, security through the screens is a serious matter of concern. Webcams can be a source to spy and click photographs, record you on video without your consent or permission.
These steps will help you retain your privacy and choose which apps and websites can get access to your webcam. However, if you witness a serious security issue with your Macbook webcam, you should get in touch with the local authorities to report the issue.
