How Positive Work Culture Helps Employees Struggling with Mental Health

You might be wondering – why discuss mental health? After all, it's often considered a personal matter. But in reality, my work life significantly impacts my personal life, and more often than not, they influence each other. This intersection makes it inevitable to discuss aspects of my mental health that affect me daily.
For several months now, I’ve been dealing with episodes of severe anxiety, which often lead to paranoia. This, combined with feelings of helplessness (sometimes self-inflicted), has made it incredibly hard to think objectively. There have been moments where I’ve acted in ways that simply don’t align with who I am.

Psychological Safety: A Core Value
One thing that has helped me cope is the psychological safety embedded in our company's values. Having a supportive network of colleagues and company policies that allow me to seek help when needed is a key reason I manage to get through the day. On days when just getting out of bed feels impossible, it's the thought of working with such a supportive team that motivates me to rise above the mental fog that can otherwise consume me.
If you were to see me interact with others, this might not make sense. I’m naturally extroverted and have often been able to push the darkness away when I’m around people. But once I’m alone, the battle is very real.
The Fight Within
That said, this fight is not easy. It’s a tragic irony that I find myself battling my own mind. Growing up, I was fiercely independent, largely due to my parents’ unique upbringing and their constant support. Yet, despite my resilience, the temptation to surrender to the darkness can be overwhelming.
There are no words to describe the feeling of helplessness that comes with fighting yourself. But perhaps, that’s why I’m sharing these deeply personal thoughts – to help others struggling with mental health realize they are not alone. Sometimes, sharing our struggles helps us feel less isolated.
Even if we are alone in our individual battles, at least we are all in this together.

Gratitude Amidst the Struggle
Despite the ongoing struggle, I consider myself blessed. I find strength in the love and support I receive from my family and work environment. Every day, I am fueled by a profound sense of gratitude, which gives me the determination to wake up and continue the fight.
Mental health struggles can feel incredibly isolating, but it’s the support of those around us that can make all the difference. A positive workplace culture, along with understanding colleagues and managers, can help individuals feel more comfortable seeking help and coping with their struggles. The Japanese concept of Kintsugi beautifully illustrates this idea. When a vessel breaks, instead of discarding it, the Japanese fill the cracks with gold or other precious metals, strengthening and beautifying it. In a way, our mental health struggles can serve a similar purpose, making us more resilient and unique.

Each personal struggle we face shapes us and adds value to our journey, just as the cracks in a Kintsugi vessel enhance its worth. We must stop hiding our battles behind stigma and start embracing them as part of our story. Reaching out for help is vital, and it can empower others facing similar challenges. So, when you feel overwhelmed, remember: help is just a conversation away.
Supporting Others Through Mental Health Struggles
For those fortunate enough to be in a position to support others, approach it with empathy and understanding. Whether it’s a family member, a colleague, or an employee, if someone reaches out to you, recognize the courage it takes to ask for help. While we may not fully empathize with mental health struggles we haven’t personally experienced, offering a sympathetic ear and a kind smile can work wonders for someone who’s struggling.
A supportive work culture plays a significant role in helping employees who are dealing with mental health challenges. It not only allows them to seek help when necessary but also fosters a community where they don’t have to fight alone.
By fostering a culture of openness and compassion, we can make workplaces better for everyone, especially those battling mental health issues.
