How Can Artificial Intelligence Replace Artists: A New Era in the Music Industry?
AI & Music

- Introduction
Hello, everyone! In this article, I would like to draw your attention to how artificial intelligence (AI) has learned to create music and is already doing it as well as artists. We never thought it would be possible before, but now it is becoming a reality that scares many people. Let's delve into it and learn the details.
- How Did It All Begin?
The beginning of this era dates back to a time before AI gained popularity. In 1951, scientist Alan Turing was inspired by the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and created the first score written with the help of an electronic computer. Brian Eno, a renowned producer for U2 and the "godfather" of ambient music, has been involved in generative music for decades, which refers to music created with the help of systems. However, recently, discussions about using artificial intelligence in music have gained momentum.
- What Can AI Do in Music Now?
What Can AI Do in Music Now?
Today, there are AI systems that can write song lyrics, create music, and replace the voices of popular artists. One of the main methods used by AI is generative modeling. AI uses recurrent and deep neural networks to analyze and create sequences of sounds and melodies. Thus, AI creates new compositions, taking into account the structure and characteristics of music from the training data.
Thanks to the development of generative modeling, AI is capable of creating music that sounds truly convincing. It studies vast volumes of musical works, analyzing timbres, nuances, and song characteristics. With the help of recurrent and deep neural networks, AI can create new compositions by combining elements it has learned from the training dataset. It is important to note that currently, AI cannot fully create a song without human involvement.
Currently, it is possible to create lyrics and music using AI (for example, using Amper AI) and then replace the voice using the corresponding software (for example, so-vitc-svc). Additional processing is also required to make the song sound the best it can be. Moreover, with the help of AI, it is possible to create a hologram of an artist, similar to Hatsune Miku, a hologram developed in 2007. Hatsune Miku used "Vocaloid" software and performed "live" worldwide, winning millions of fans. Other examples of AI programs include music generation using Amper, Jukebox, Soundraw, Soundful, Aiva, and Google's machine learning research project called Magenta. Recently, Google also introduced software called SingSong, which creates full backing tracks based on a hummed melody, and a program called MusicLM, which purportedly can create entire songs based on textual prompts.
- What Do Music Companies and Musicians Think?
Last year, VICE reported serious concerns from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). They expressed concern that software such as RemoveVocals and Songmastr takes copyrighted works and creates new material without attributing authorship to the original performers and their recording companies. Some musicians ridicule the idea of AI replacing them. Many of them are unhappy that AI copies their voice and even creates new songs on their behalf. Many artists are afraid that AI will replace them, rendering them simply unnecessary. They also fear that someone will profit from creating songs without having the rights to do so.
- Examples
I would like to provide a few examples of music created with the help of AI:
Heart on My Sleeve" (Drake ft. The Weeknd) - a composition created with the help of AI.
Somebody That I Used to Know" (Kanye ft. Playboi Carti) - AI took the voices of popular artists Kanye West and Playboi Carti and performed a track by singer Gotye.
Winters Cold" (Drake) - one of my favorite tracks created with AI.
- Conclusion
Can artificial intelligence replace humans in music? To some extent, yes. AI is already capable of creating decent musical compositions today, but human involvement is always required. AI lacks the genuine human emotions and experiences that artists possess. Fans will always have a connection to their real idols. However, AI brings new possibilities to the music industry by enabling the creation of unique compositions and the use of artist holograms. This raises both interest and concerns among music companies and musicians themselves. The future of music using AI remains a topic of discussion, and only time will tell how this new era in the music industry will unfold.
