
1、Electric vehicles Information——US states sue over Trump freeze on funds for electric-vehicle charging stations
According to Reuters on May 7, Sixteen US states including California launched legal action against the Trump administration on Tuesday, alleging unlawful withholding of billions of federal funds allocated for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure development.The dispute stems from the US Department of Transportation’s suspension of the EV charging initiative in February, which revoked states’ previously approved access to charging infrastructure funding.
2、Energy Storage Information——Kansai Electric to Develop 99MW/396MWh Storage Project on Retired Power Plant Site in Japan
On 7 May 2025, Kansai Electric Power announced plans to develop a 99MW/396MWh battery energy storage system at the site of the former Tanigawa Power Station in Minami, Osaka Prefecture. The project, undertaken in partnership with its subsidiary Kinden and Japan Excellent Infrastructure (JEXI), is scheduled to commence construction in June 2025 and begin operations in 2028.
The project will repurpose land and grid infrastructure from the former 462MW Tanigawa plant (closed in 2001) and the adjacent 1.2GW Tanaka No.2 plant (shut down in 2020).
3、Renewable Energy Information——Coal India to set up $3 billion worth clean energy projects to boost renewable heft
According to Reuters on May 8, Coal India will set up clean energy projects of around 4.5 gigawatts at a cost of 250 billion rupees (about $3 billion), as it aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions from its operations.India aims to add at least 500 GW of clean energy by 2030, against 172 GW currently.
4、Energy Storage Information——Britain's National Wealth Fund to lend Iberdrola $800 mln for UK power grid upgrades
According to Reuters on May 8, Britain's National Wealth Fund will lend 600 million pounds ($802 million) to Iberdrola-owned ScottishPower to help fund upgrades to the country’s power grid. The investment aims to modernise the grid and support the government’s target of a decarbonised power system by 2030.
5、Renewable Energy Information——Northland Power puts 1,000MWh largest BESS in Canada into commercial operations
On 8 May, Northland Power’s 250MW/1,000MWh Oneida Energy Storage project in Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada, has entered commercial operations.The Oneida battery energy storage system (BESS) is the largest energy storage facility in operation in Canada.
Notably, the BESS more than doubles Ontario’s energy storage capacity from 225MW to 475MW and is expected to reduce emissions in the province by approximately 1.2 – 4.1 million tonnes over its lifetime.
6、Energy Storage Information——Synergy’s 2GWh Collie Battery Project Enters Commissioning, Targets 2025 Launch
Acording to China Energy Storage Network, 8 May, Western Australian energy developer Synergy has commenced commissioning its 2GWh Collie battery storage project, following the installation of 640 battery units and 160 inverters. Scheduled for full operation in 2025, the facility is set to become one of Australia’s largest battery energy storage systems, capable of delivering four hours of power to approximately 785,000 households.
7、Electric vehicles Information——CATL is the first to have its full range of EV batteries pass China’s new national safety standard.
On 9 May, CATL's full range of passenger and commercial vehicle batteries – including Kirin, Shenxing ultra-fast charging, Xiaoyao hybrid, Chocolate swap battery, and an autonomous driving battery pack– achieved full compliance with China's updated GB 38031-2025 traction battery safety requirements. CATL has become the first company in China to meet the new standard across all battery sectors.
The new standard, scheduled for implementation on 1 July 2026,introduces stricter safety tests based on real-world user scenarios.
8、Renewable Energy Information——UK boosts offshore wind investment with $720 million funding increase; The Crown Estate approves 4.7GW project expansions.
According to Reuters on May 8,Britain has increased the investment incentive scheme which the government calls the "Clean Industry Bonus" from £200 million to £544 million ($721.78 million) to meet strong demand for offshore wind investment.
At the same time, The Crown Estate has approved the expansion of seven offshore wind projects,including RWE's Rampion 2, and SSE and Equinor's Dogger Bank D, adding 4.7 gigawatts (GW) of new installed capacity—enough to power around 4 million homes and support the UK’s 2030 target of 50GW.
9、Electric vehicles Information——Sustainable Switch Climate Focus: EU softens car emissions targets
According to Reuters on May 10, the European Parliament gave its backing to soften its EU CO2 emissions targets for cars and vans and reduce potential fines for automakers. And the European Commission proposed allowing automakers to meet the targets based on their average emissions over the period 2025-2027, rather than just this year.
10、Energy Storage Information——US and China put 90-day pause on tariffs, effective duty on BESS falls to c.60%
The US and China have announced a 90 day ‘pause’ on their huge reciprocal tariffs while they continue negotiations.This temporary reprieve, effective until 1 July, has significantly impacted the battery energy storage system (BESS) sector, with the effective tariff on BESS more than halving to around 60%.
11、Electric vehicles Information——In Q1 2025, Global EV battery installations reached 221.8 GWh, up 38.8% year-on-year, with six Chinese firms ranking in the global top ten.
