The finest Mac programs help you get the most out of your Mac by enhancing its capabilities and addressing its flaws. They make using your Mac easier and more pleasurable, increasing your productivity and allowing you to get more out of your gadget.

Many of these apps are free to download from the Mac App Store, which you can find by clicking the App Store icon on your Mac’s dock (if you can’t find it, open the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select App Store). The App Store is jam-packed with thousands of apps of varying quality, which is why we based this list of the best Mac apps on our own hands-on experience and user reviews.

1. Bear

Bear is a versatile, encrypted, and simple-to-use free note-taking app. While Apple’s free Notes app continues to improve, Bear does a lot of things that Notes does better, and with a greater focus on your privacy. Bear’s free version allows you to create portable Markdown notes and to-do lists, organize notes with nested tags, pull assets (like images or text) from web pages into your notes, and even draw or dictate notes using a stylus (for drawing) or an Apple Watch (for dictation). The Bear Pro version ($14.99/year) adds even more useful features, such as the ability to sync notes between devices, encrypt individual notes with a password, and lock the Bear app with Face/Touch ID.

2. Fantastical

Although your Mac already has a calendar, Fantastical outperforms it. We’ve long favored this award-winning app, and at least one Tom’s Guide editor swears by it as a productivity tool. Fantastical’s free version includes a slick, simple calendar that makes it simple to organize your tasks and see what’s coming up at a glance. If you’re willing to pay a monthly fee, you can upgrade to the upgraded version, which includes cross-platform Fantastical access as well as syncing across Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

3. Spark

On macOS, there are better options than the default Mail app, and Spark is one of them. This free email client has a suite of functions that make it simple for several individuals to manage an inbox by doing things like assigning emails to each other or drafting emails collaboratively in real time, which the competition lacks. It also has superb capabilities for organizing your inbox, scheduling emails, and using a natural language search engine to discover exactly what you’re looking for. Spark has excellent iOS and Android apps, making it a useful solution for handling email across several platforms.

4. Alfred 4

Alfred 4 is the most recent and greatest version of Alfred, which provides a better way to search for files on your Mac and the internet in general. Alfred can also be used to launch apps, look up spelling and definitions, perform fast computations, and generally make the most of your new Mac. What’s the best part? It’s free, but you can upgrade to a version with more sophisticated capabilities for a one-time price, including the ability to play music from iTunes, create workflows and hotkeys, personalize Alfred’s appearance, and more.

5. Daisydisk

DaisyDisk is one of the best Mac disk space managers since it is strong, adaptable, and appealing to the eye. This $10 utility instantly scans your storage drive(s) to present you with a beautiful interactive map of how your Mac’s storage space is being used, and its drag-and-drop tools make it simple to move things around and free up space. Furthermore, the most recent version also allows scanning drives on cloud storage services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and others.

6. Meeter

Meeter is a small software that lives on your Mac’s menu bar and keeps track of all your video calls, whether they’re on BlueJeans, FaceTime, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, Zoom, or one of the other thirty video-conferencing services. Meeter is a great program for remote workers in normal times, but it’s especially handy during the COVID-19 pandemic for anyone who routinely makes video calls with family and friends. The free version syncs with your calendar and pulls in details for forthcoming calls, making it simple to know what’s coming up and join with a single click — no more digging through your email for the proper meeting link.

7. Tweetbot

Tweetbot is a must-have Mac software if you use Twitter frequently. This $10 app enhances your Twitter experience by providing you with a powerful set of filters that can help you filter out spoilers, promoted tweets, and more. It offers a clean user interface that makes it simple to track hashtags, navigate between accounts, and scribble notes on private user profiles.

8. Steam

If you want to play games on your Mac, you should download Steam first. Steam, which was founded nearly two decades ago by Valve, has grown to become one of the most popular PC game platforms in the world. Although not every game on Steam is compatible with macOS, Steam makes it simple to sort through its 50,000+ games to find the ones that do. There are plenty of fantastic games to choose from, including Sid Meier’s Civilization VI and Stardew Valley, as well as Cuphead, Hades, Disco Elysium, and others. You can also connect a compatible Bluetooth controller to your new Mac for some classic gamepad gaming.

9. Spotify

If you’re not already listening to music on Apple Music, chances are you’re using Spotify. Even if you aren’t a Spotify user yet, the macOS desktop app gives you more control over your playlists than the web app and does so in a slick, easy-to-navigate design.
