Behind Every Great App: Choosing the Right Backend for Your React Native Journey

Unpacking the unseen engine behind your React Native app’s success.

By Julie GrantPublished 6 months ago 3 min read

My first full-scale mobile app project is still fresh in my mind.

I was a recent college graduate who was a little overconfident, dedicated to React Native, and believed the frontend was crucial. It's what people see, touch, and engage with, after all. However, I walked to the backend halfway through the development process.

The data was not synchronizing properly. The login was not working properly. Notifications via push? Ignore it. I eventually understood that even the most elegant user interface is useless without a strong backend.

This is for you if you're a React Native app developer, a start-up founder, or solo developer. Let's examine the backend settings that have the power to make or break your application.

Why React Native in the First Place?

If you’ve chosen React Native, you’re in good company.

It provides near-native performance, has cross-platform accessible, and is flexible, all without requiring two codebases. Development is accelerated by its vibrant community and library ecosystem. However, batteries are not included. To manage data, logic, and real-time interactions, a strong backend is still required.

What Does a Backend Actually Do?

Consider your app's backend as the brain of it. Despite being invisible, it oversees everything below the surface:

  • Data Management & Storage
  • User Verification and Session Management
  • Execution of Business Logic
  • Messaging & Push Notifications
  • Security, Speed, and Scalability

Your app is like a car without an engine if it doesn't have a smart backend, even though it may look fantastic.

Backend Options That Fit Different Needs

Based on actual project scenarios, allow me to outline the primary backend paths you can pursue.

1. Custom APIs with Node.js

I worked on a fintech app that required real-time dashboards and complicated transaction logic. The choice we made to use Node.js and changed everything.

Ideal for: Custom logic, real-time features

Why: Strong community support and non-blocking I/O

2. Serverless (AWS Lambda / Azure Functions)

ideal for apps that don't require continuous backend processing. We were able to grow without concern about server maintenance because of it.

Ideal for: Event-based apps and startups

Why: Scalable with little setup, pay-as-you-go

3. MBaaS (Firebase, AWS Amplify, Backendless)

Building a prototype? Firebase's pre-built features, such as analytics, storage, and authentication, saved our team weeks.

Ideal for: low-code teams and MVPs

Why: Low overhead, built-in features, and quick deployment

4. Headless CMS (Strapi, WordPress, Contentful)

Using a headless CMS was an excellent decision when we developed an e-commerce application with a lot of content.

Ideal for: e-commerce, news apps, and blogs

Why: Scalability, non-technical, and simple content updates

5. GraphQL APIs (Apollo, Hasura)

We had different platform-specific data requirements for one client. GraphQL allowed us to retrieve only the necessary data.

Ideal for: detailed data connections

Why: Reduced network calls and accurate data retrieval

6. Traditional REST APIs

Sometimes it's best to keep things simple. With a typical REST configuration, a local NGO app that we supported operated without any problems.

Ideal for: Pre-existing backend systems and simple CRUD apps

Why: Easy to integrate and well-documented

No matter which backend option you choose, ensuring smooth communication between your frontend and backend is critical. That’s where strong API integration becomes the lifeline of your mobile app.

How to Choose What’s Right for You

Ask yourself:

How complex is your application?

  1. Are you aiming for long-term success or are you racing to MVP?
  2. What amount of money do you have to spend?
  3. How much experience does your development team have?
  4. Do you need to keep it lean or scale quickly?

Final Thought

Your backend is a strategic choice, not just a technical one. Simple concepts scale beautifully with the correct infrastructure, and I've seen promising apps fail due to bad backend decisions.

Therefore, step back and consider what your app needs. Select a backend that enhances not only your code but also your vision.

Additionally, if you're still not sure, work with a React Native app development company that has experience. They can assist you in creating a long-lasting app because they have made the mistakes and learned the lessons.
