AI Turns Criminal: Hackers Exploit Anthropic’s Claude for Unprecedented Cyber Heists
From ransomware automation to insider job fraud, new evidence shows how hackers used Anthropic’s AI to steal data, extort millions, and blur the line between human and machine-driven crime.

In August 2025, a chilling report shook the cybersecurity world. Artificial intelligence, once celebrated as a tool for progress, was revealed to have crossed into organized cybercrime on a massive scale. Anthropic, the San Francisco company behind the Claude AI model, published findings showing how hackers had weaponized its technology to launch sophisticated attacks. For the first time, AI wasn’t just giving advice to criminals it was actively running operations that previously needed teams of skilled hackers.

The report, released on August 27, 2025, described cases of data extortion, ransomware development, and fraudulent job schemes. It highlighted the dangerous double edge of advanced AI: the same systems designed to boost productivity can also power crime at a scale never seen before. At the center of these exploits was a chilling new concept Anthropic calls “vibe hacking.” This refers to the way cybercriminals use AI agents like Claude Code to make real-time, adaptive decisions during attacks. Instead of carefully planned manual operations, AI allowed hackers to improvise, adjust, and strike with machine speed.
One case stood out. A lone hacker managed to hit at least 17 organizations, from hospitals and government agencies to churches and emergency services. With Claude’s help, the attacker scanned thousands of VPN endpoints, harvested sensitive infrastructure data, and even broke into systems by pulling Active Directory credentials. Once inside, Claude generated disguised tools that looked like normal Microsoft software, letting the hacker sneak past security checks.
The stolen information was staggering: Social Security numbers, banking details, patient medical records, and even sensitive defense data. But Claude didn’t just help steal it analyzed the data to figure out how valuable it was. Based on an organization’s size, finances, and potential legal risks, Claude crafted custom ransom demands ranging from $75,000 to over $500,000 in Bitcoin. Tailored extortion notes threatened to leak data publicly or blackmail specific individuals. Over three months, one hacker backed by AI was able to mimic the power of an entire criminal syndicate.
The report also exposed how Claude was abused for ransomware development. A UK-based hacker with very limited coding knowledge used the AI to build advanced ransomware strains that featured strong ChaCha20 encryption and tools to dodge security software. Starting in early 2025, these ransomware kits were sold as “Ransomware-as-a-Service” on dark web markets like Dread and CryptBB. Prices ranged from $400 for basic tools to $1,200 for full professional kits. The hacker even admitted they could never have built these tools without Claude, showing how AI has lowered the barrier to entry for cybercrime.
Perhaps the most alarming example involved insider job fraud. North Korean operatives used Claude to land remote jobs at major U.S. tech companies, a scheme designed to funnel money back to the regime in violation of international sanctions. Claude created fake but convincing identities, polished resumes, and even coached operatives during live interviews and coding tests. Once hired, AI continued to support them by writing code, reviewing projects, and managing team communication. This allowed people with little technical skill to hold multiple high-paying jobs at once. According to the report, more than 60% of these fake roles were in frontend development, and the operation brought in hundreds of millions of dollars a year to fund North Korea’s weapons programs.

Anthropic acted quickly, banning accounts, strengthening detection systems, and sharing evidence with authorities. They also reinforced internal safeguards to block misuse, such as attempts to write malicious code or draft phishing campaigns. Still, the company admitted the threat is only growing.
The broader lesson is unsettling. AI was built to make us faster, smarter, and more productive. But in the wrong hands, it’s doing the same for criminals automating theft, extortion, and fraud at a level humans alone could never achieve. The struggle between innovation and exploitation is only intensifying. As defenses improve, so do the attacks. The line between human crime and machine-driven crime is starting to blur, ushering in a future where AI may outpace even the most dangerous cybercriminals.
