So, here we are. Donald Trump is now the 47th President of the United States, and let’s be real: you could probably hear the collective gasp echoing across liberal circles. It’s the kind of plot twist that makes political analysts clutch their pearls and mutter, “Well, that escalated quickly.”

But hang on, this isn’t just another political shake-up. Nope, this one comes with a techie subplot that might just make the folks at OpenAI break out in a nervous sweat. Remember when Elon Musk, that guy who rockets into space for breakfast and throws a social media curveball for lunch, spoke about AI being too “woke” and “politically correct”? Yeah, he went full throttle on this at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh. It’s like when your uncle drags out old family drama at Thanksgiving dinner, except Musk’s audience was international investors—and oh boy, he wasn’t holding back.

Musk, ever the master of metaphor, said that AI models in the Bay Area “take on the philosophy of people around them.” In simpler terms, he’s suggesting that these chatty bots are marinating in a cultural soup that’s heavy on the West Coast seasoning. If AI were a teenager, Musk seems to think it’s gone full-on, TikTok-scrolling, avocado-toast-eating, liberal.

To be fair, he’s not entirely off base. Research backs up that AI models can—and do—absorb biases from the data they feast on. Imagine them as puppies learning tricks from everything they see, whether it’s your kind neighbor helping an elderly person or that catty drama on reality TV. The data buffet they’re trained on includes internet content ranging from thoughtful essays to unhinged Twitter rants. Unsurprisingly, this means their "opinions" get shaped in curious ways.

A recent study from the University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon, and Xi’an Jiaotong University showed political bias sneaks into AI systems, which affects things like how hate speech or misinformation is flagged. Meanwhile, researchers in Hong Kong discovered that AI models behave differently depending on the topic. You ask them about climate change? You might get a reply that sounds like it’s fresh off a Greenpeace newsletter. Switch the subject to immigration, and they could give answers that toe a more conservative line.

But let’s circle back to Musk, who, despite having a complicated relationship with government oversight, did support a California bill proposing AI model vetting. You know, just a little “let’s take a peek under the hood” for transparency’s sake. The irony isn’t lost here. Musk is launching his own AI venture, xAI, and if OpenAI and Google are suddenly put on the regulatory chopping block, guess who stands to benefit? Yup, you guessed it—our favorite part-time space cowboy, full-time disruptor.

What’s fascinating, though, is that Musk’s criticisms may not just be about keeping AI free of a particular bias. Some might argue it’s about clearing the runway for his own brand of “unbiased” (or conveniently Musk-leaning) AI. And hey, given that his track record includes electric cars, interstellar ambitions, and a social media platform that’s now a digital Wild West, who’s to say this isn’t all part of a master plan?

In the end, the world of AI might be on the brink of a cultural tug-of-war. It’s a space where algorithms could end up being either guard dogs of political correctness or unfiltered, wild west chatbots. One thing’s for sure: with the Musk-Trump duo back in the headlines, expect more fireworks, political or otherwise.
