A potent winter storm brings treacherous conditions across a swath of the US. Two more are right behind it.
A powerful winter storm is currently wreaking havoc across a significant portion of the United States bringing with it a mix of snow ice and rain. This storm is the first in a series of three back to back winter storms expected to impact the country this week. The first storm has already begun dumping snow and ice over a 1,500 mile stretch of the eastern United States affecting areas from Kentucky to the mid Atlantic region. The second storm is expected to follow closely behind bringing the most substantial snowfall of the season to Chicago while the third storm poses a serious flood threat to Southern California the most significant since the devastating wildfires in January. In Washington D.C snow began falling in the mid afternoon on Tuesday and is expected to continue overnight. Forecasters predict up to 6 inches of snow could accumulate potentially disrupting travel during the afternoon and evening commute. This winter has already seen more snow in the nation’s capital than the past two winters combined highlighting the intensity of this year’s winter weather.
From Kentucky to the mid Atlantic snow has been steadily piling up with widespread totals of 3 to 6 inches already reported in areas from central Kentucky to western Virginia. Further east in Virginia 1 to 3 inches of snow have fallen with more expected as the storm continues to track eastward into Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued warnings about the potential for significant ice accumulation particularly in parts of West Virginia Virginia and North Carolina where more than 0.25 inches of ice could accumulate by Wednesday. This ice could make roads treacherous and impassable while the weight of the ice on tree limbs and power lines could lead to numerous power outages. The second winter storm which is expected to hit some of the same areas as the first is forecast to bring the heaviest snowfall of the season to Chicago. This storm could exacerbate the already challenging conditions particularly in areas still recovering from the first storm. Meanwhile, the third storm which is expected to impact Southern California poses a significant flood threat. This is particularly concerning given the recent wildfires that have left the region more vulnerable to flooding and mudslides.
These storms are part of a relentless chain of disruptive weather events that have been impacting the United States since the beginning of February. Each storm has brought its own set of challenges from heavy snowfall and ice accumulation to the threat of flooding. The cumulative effect of these storms has been significant with widespread disruptions to travel power outages and the potential for property damage. As the first storm continues to move eastward residents in affected areas are being urged to exercise caution particularly when traveling. The National Weather Service has emphasized the dangers of icy roads and the potential for power outages due to ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs. In areas expected to be hit by the second and third storms preparations are underway to mitigate the potential impacts particularly in Southern California where the flood threat is most acute.
This week’s series of winter storms underscores the unpredictable and often severe nature of winter weather in the United States. With each storm bringing its own set of challenges residents across the country are being reminded of the importance of staying informed and prepared as they navigate the treacherous conditions brought on by these powerful winter storms.
