Why You Can Stop Reading "Easy Ways To Make Money Writing Online" Articles
The truth is, I'm going to tell you the truth about writing online and how to make money. I'm also going to dispel the myths others seem to believe in.
So, you want to make money as a writer. Good for you! Do you have anything interesting to say? There’s a harsh truth to this. Of course, you said yes, presuming you want to be a writer.
Several years ago, there was an article about somebody paying over a million dollars for a comic book. In 2024, Action Comics #1 sold for six million. What’s that got to do with you having something interesting to say? Good question?
The Action Comics #1, worth $6,000,000, was worth that because somebody wanted it that badly. While what you have to say is interesting to you, how do you know it’ll be interesting to anyone else in the world?
Making money writing online is easy, according to some people who are actually going to spin you. It’s a nice and attractive headline, mostly used by writers who are writing on an online platform. It is there to attract whom?
You guessed it. It’s there to attract people who aren’t making money writing online, but are still writing online. Or, it’s there to attract newbies who are just starting out, trying to get their feet wet, and see if they can eventually swim.
Far be it from me to burst your bubbles, but there is no easy way to make money writing online except one. That’s it, and that’s all. There is one easy way to make money online as a writer.
You want to know what the know-it-all writing this article thinks the one way that’s easy to make money writing online is, don’t you? If not, go ahead and click that back button and read something else. Nobody’s holding a gun to your head to make you read anything on any platform or service.
But for you newer writers who seeing all of the “Easiest ways to make money as an online writer” articles, or the more experienced ones curious enough to see what a hack drones on about when he’s tired and weary, here’s your one guaranteed tip that will work.
All you have to do to make money writing online is…

Why didn’t anyone tell you that? Nobody’s supposed to tell you anything about the things you decide to try. It’s your journey, not theirs. But, it’s true.
Anybody can make a few dollars, and many make several hundred dollars, even thousands, through online writing. It all depends on your skill levels, your commitment, and your willingness to fail.
If you want to make more than just a few pennies, I’d honestly suggest getting a day job. Unless you’re young enough, you don’t need much yet, you’re going to have to pay the bills somehow, and writing on Medium isn’t going to get you there.
But, you could be the crazy one that decides to incorporate writing into your daily life, gets better, starts a newsletter, writes poetry, and puts together a poetry book, or even goes to school to be a writer. Even then, you have to have something to say that people want to read.
In 2021, I made around seven thousand dollars as a writer. Markets change, however, and it quickly died when some changed how they paid writers. On Vocal, since 2000, I’ve probably made a thousand dollars. I’ve made eighty on Substack. Jesus, does anybody have any suggestions for other platforms that pay better?
Wait, I also took a freelance job for $50.00. I’ve gotten a few tips along the way, and I’m in the ballpark area of finishing a manuscript for a novel. Most of that is because I started on these platforms, got good enough to earn a small following, and some of them were kind enough to give me valuable tips.
So, while there are ways to make money writing online, they aren’t going to be easy. Only the most talented writers are going to find it easy, and even they are struggling more in 2025 than they used to when it comes to earnings. But if you continue to write, use all of the tools available to become a better, more skilled writer, and develop the ability to offer people things they want to read, you’ll make a few bucks. Eventually, you might even crack the 10,000-dollar year, and from there, the sky's the limit.
I hate to burst the bubble of writers telling you how easy it is to make money doing this, but it’s not easy. It takes work, patience, dedication, and then some more work.

Well said, my friend.
Spot on and the perfect fuel for inspiration! Thank you for sharing this, J!
Excellent writing Jason. I am a big reader and I love writing too, but I get tired of seeing these 'magic potions' telling me how to do it all over the web. You have to believe in yourself and have faith in what you can write if you want to make money in the world of writing, however, you also have to understand that you're not going to make it big overnight, or maybe, you wont make much at all. You are correct, the way to make money is just write. I've been saying that to people, ever since I started.
