Thirteen Entries, Two Top Stories, and the Winners Are:

(1st) Mike Singleton (2nd) kp, and (3rd) Tim Carmichael

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Rules Were:

Is it time for another unofficial challenge? How about a "mostly" non-fiction drabble? For artistry sake, you may embellish a bit...But let's make this one all about YOU. Include a description of yourself as a child either playing with your favorite toy, spending time with a beloved pet, reading your favorite book, or glued to your favorite tv show or movie, etc. You may include your favorite snack, but more importantly, include your personality, too.

Let us know what that child is thinking/feeling/planning/dreaming.

Let it be as if you are looking at an old snapshot from a family album and explaining the story behind it. (If you are as old as me, that photo might be in black and white, so please give it some much needed color....lol)

Remember, a drabble is only 100 words...

The ENTRIES ACCORDING TO DATE of submission:

** from Mike Singleton:

100 words...yes! part I loved the best: support from his father description: perfectly done by using a photo and by taking us to a place in "his world," I could "see" him with his little orange guitar, those chubby legs jumping up and down to those tunes,! He was molded by music and it's still so very important to him. Loved it throughout!

** from Raymond G. Taylor:

100 words...yes! part I loved the best: tribute to the mothers who encouraged their sons to truly be gentlemen and expand their thinking and "artful" skills. I could taste those biscuits and milky coffee and even smell the dirt flying from combat. I would say those mamas raised their sons to be the "complete" men of action! Loved thinking about Ray at ten!

** from kp:

100 words...yes! part I loved the best: the uncomfortable depth of description used to understand the pain that "unacceptance" caused a child to endure. So thought-provoking, intelligent, and heartbreaking. And all so masterfully done within a hundred words! kp's picture is perfect...especially with the "pink" shirt. Loved the brave, defiant spirit of this child!

** from Angie the Archivist:

100 words...yes! part I loved the best: the "waiting" banana trees! Cute girl?...most definitely! Guileless?...well, the jury is still out on that one...lol But still, very, very polite and obedient...make that clever :) So love our Angie! Now I can't help but to think of you when I see a banana...

** from Sandy Gillman:

100 words...yes! part I loved the best: "But when I came home to my dog, he always made me feel like I belonged." Never underestimate the power of a best friend and it's even better when they are dressed in fur :) Loved how this took us to a specific time in history, too! Thank you for allowing us in to your private world!

** from Matthew Fromm:

100 words...yes! part I loved best: the Queen has spoken! (in your mother's firm resolve) I must admit that I had to refer to Wikipedia on "Hobbitery," but did find a golden nugget: "The Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey...notes this allows Tolkien to display Rohan both as English, based on their Old English names and words like "eored" (troop of cavalry...which I understand Eomer led?), and as "alien, to offer a glimpse of the way land shapes people." I think all of us here on Vocal and I'm sure, in your circle of family and friends, can attest to the gallantry we see in your work as a creator and as a man, and now we know who to thank! It was great being part of your world (until your mom interrupted us, too...lol.) ****TOP STORY****

** from Paul Stewart:

100 words...96+4 (bowls of pasta) lol part I loved the best: Well, besides giving me a chuckle with your expression and seeing Aunt Zia Maria orchestrate her own personal symphony (and making me hungry for some of Nonna's pasta,) there was seeing the little Maximus Decimus Meridius in you, and your Roman DNA shining in the arena!! I think you have made us all jealous of your lovely family and the love and laughter you had at Nonna's. Seeing this picture of community and generosity indwelling within you comes at no surprise to me, though. Now we see its beginnings... ****TOP STORY****

**from: Mother Combs:

100 words...yes! part I loved the best: "the child always put on a show." How wonderful to feel so loved and have so much fun...what a great environment and wonderful grandmothers. The size of that framed picture attests to the adoration they had for you, too. Now we see (in your stories/poems/love for others) that you still mimic all the fun you learned! Thank you for making us feel special, too.

**from: Diane Foster:

100 words...yes! part I loved the best: It would be a tie between the futile attempts to convince your dog of his character or the grown-up wish for a secret passage. One made me giggle and the other made me dream...What a beautiful story of you as a child! And I LOVED the image which was magical and heart-warming, too.

**from Tim Carmichael:

100 words...yes! part I loved the best: Skippy the raccoon, your sidekick because it made me think of the movie/book, "Where the Red Fern Grows," but also the secret stories you wrote, and that head full of unruly hair! We could all learn a whole lot from that mountain boy!

**from Annie Kapur:

100 words...not quite? part I loved the best: the thought of you dancing in the kitchen as that cute little toddler! Such a great learning environment for a child, full of videos and books and questions! And cookies!!!

**from Cristal Beikd:

100 words...yes! part I loved the best: spending a rainy summer day with little Cristal and Little My! It truly felt like I was from your vivid description. The video you posted with the cartoon translated in any language and what a delight to see culture transcend from a child's view!

**from Calvin London:

100 words...almost? part I loved the best: the determination of a very smart four year old boy and all the fun he had on that one day! So glad you had a quick-thinking mom and the outcome was just a chuckle, though :)
