The Power of Preparation

A lesson on commitment responsibility, and action

By Rohitha LankaPublished 10 months ago 2 min read

Only drum when you are prepared to dance

The proverb contains a heavy and deep lesson for humanity about responsibility, preparedness, and accountability. It is a cautionary tale reminder that beginning something, a commitment, an aspiration, a challenge, without the will to see it through its course can spell doom and (conversely) lead to failure and disappointment, if not a lack of credibility.

Meaning

1. Dedication instead of euphoria.

drumming- which means attracting attention to something, or, you know, announcing something, or creating excitement.

Dance is a symbol of action, of doing, of being able to deliver.

Failure to delivering what you started if you are not ready, will ruin your image, self belief and dreams.

2. Preparation before execution.

So now we have to prepare, we have to prepare, we have to prepare for success.

Like a dancer taking the stage for the first time, everyone must learn the steps before setting out, meaning individuals and organizations need to arm themselves before setting out.

3. The Cost of Immature Actions.

The sacrifice it takes to build businesses, careers, or ventures is lost on many.

Corporations oversell services, politicians break promises they can't keep, and individuals brag about things they aren't prepared to do, only to experience a form of humiliation or failure down the line.

4. Leadership and Integrity.

A leader has to choose his words and actions carefully and to make sure that what they set out to do is within their reach.

Empty statements destroy trust and authority; cautious, considerate leadership earns trust and respect.

5. Self-Improvement and Ownership.

Prior to making a radical decision - in business, relationships, life - it's crucial that you evaluate whether you have the resources, knowledge and stamina to come out on top.

In general, most dreams die before they ever get off the ground, not because they were impossible, but because people jumped into them before they were prepared.

Real-life applications.

Entrepreneurs must conduct market research, ensure financial stability, and create a strategic plan before starting a business.

Leaders in leadership should only promise things they can deliver; creating creditability is an act, not a verb.

In developmental goals, goal setting is like a cake, but discipline, planning, and hard work make the goal a reality.

Final Thought

When the drum is beaten, be prepared to jump. If you are going to announce your ambitions, be prepared to hustle for them. If you want something to change, be willing to be the change. Success is not in the noise: they are the ones who take the long route the few that complete what they start.
