Once upon a time, a long time ago, there was a monk. One day, he chose to meditate alone, away from his monastery. So, he took a boat to the center of the lake, closed his eyes, and started to meditate.

After several hours of undisturbed silence, he suddenly felt the blow of another boat hitting his own. With his eyes still closed, he felt his anger build, and when he opened his eyes, he was ready to shout at the boatman who dared to disturb his meditation. But when he opened his eyes, he saw that it was an empty boat, not anchored, floating in the middle of the lake.

At that moment, the monk reached self-realization and understood that anger was within him. It simply needed the hit of an external object to trigger it. From that day on, whenever he met someone who irritated or provoked his anger, he remembered that the other person was just an empty boat. The anger was inside of him.

This realization was transformative for the monk. He started to see that all his emotions were internal and that external events merely triggered what was already inside. He began to practice mindfulness, observing his thoughts and feelings without judgment. When he felt anger, sadness, or frustration, he would pause and reflect on the empty boat, reminding himself that these emotions were his own creation.

The monk's newfound awareness led him to a deeper understanding of himself and others. He became more compassionate, recognizing that everyone he encountered was also dealing with their own internal struggles. He realized that just as he had been unaware of the empty boat, others might also be unaware of their own emotional triggers. This empathy allowed him to respond to others with kindness and patience.

The monk's story spread throughout the monastery and beyond. People began to apply the lesson of the empty boat in their own lives. They found that by taking responsibility for their emotions, they could navigate life’s challenges with greater ease and grace. The concept of the empty boat became a powerful tool for personal growth and emotional resilience.

You see, in life, in your life, this goes for bad and for good feelings, for bad and for good emotions. Anger, love, happiness—all are inside of you. All the other people in the world, in your life, are just empty boats. You decide what emotion you want to attract and what emotion you trigger in your life.

So, the next time you get angry, the next time you get sad, close your eyes and remember the empty boat story. Everything is just inside of you, and everything else is just an empty boat. This is progress mastery.

In our daily lives, we often encounter situations that provoke strong emotions. Whether it's a disagreement with a loved one, a stressful day at work, or an unexpected setback, these moments can trigger feelings of anger, frustration, or sadness. By remembering the story of the empty boat, we can cultivate a sense of inner calm and emotional stability.

When you feel your emotions rising, take a moment to pause and breathe. Reflect on the fact that the source of your feelings is within you, not the external event. This simple practice can help you gain perspective and respond more thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively. By recognizing and tuning into our own emotions, we become more self-aware and mindful, which allows us to make informed decisions and respond to situations more effectively.
