(This was a short story meant as a practice for me to write a whole book, hope you enjoy!)

I’d kept it hidden my whole life, my strange ability to sense things others couldn’t. For as long as I could remember, I’d walk into a room, and something in me would sense a person’s fear, anxiety, or physical pain. I never dared to tell anyone, fearing they’d think I was making it up—or worse, call it a “gift” I didn’t want.

For years, I convinced myself it was all in my head. I avoided big crowds and emotionally charged places, sticking to my quiet job as a librarian, where the biggest disruption was the occasional overdue book fine. It was safe, predictable, and exactly what I thought I wanted. But all that changed one ordinary Thursday afternoon.

The Emergency I’d just finished a late lunch, packing up the leftovers and watching the clock, when the library doors burst open. A man stumbled in, clutching his chest, his face pale and drawn. My coworkers and I froze, staring, as he staggered toward the counter, wheezing.

In that instant, something within me stirred to life. It wasn’t just my instinct to help—I could *feel* the tightness in his chest, the erratic beat of his heart like it was happening in my own body. I recognized the symptoms, even though I had no medical training, as if I’d always known how this would feel.

“Please,” he gasped. “I… I think I’m having a heart attack.”

A Hidden Talent Unleashed

It was a surreal, almost out-of-body experience. My coworkers scrambled to call for help, but I felt an urge I’d never felt before, one so strong it erased all my fears. I knelt beside him, taking his hand, and said, “It’s going to be okay.” I didn’t know what made me say it; I just knew he needed to hear it.

In those tense moments, I guided him through breathing exercises, instinctively matching his breaths to calm his heart. I felt like a part of me was speaking directly to his pain, soothing it. The sensation was overwhelming, almost exhausting, but I couldn’t let go.

As the paramedics arrived and took over, they commended my efforts. One of them looked at me and said, “If you hadn’t stepped in, this could’ve ended a lot worse.” My heart pounded. I’d done something that made a difference, something I’d never realized I was capable of.

The Reflection

As the man was taken to the hospital, I sat back, trembling. My hidden ability—the one I’d kept quiet for so long—had saved someone’s life. I realized then that hiding away, suppressing this part of myself, had almost cost a man his life. What I thought was a burden had become a blessing.

Over the next few days, word spread around town, and people began to reach out to me. Some had heard of “empaths” and told me stories of people who could sense others’ feelings in a similar way. For the first time, I didn’t feel so alone. And for the first time, I wasn’t afraid to embrace this part of me.

If there’s one thing I learned that day, it’s this: sometimes, the things we keep hidden have the power to change lives—maybe even save them. We’re all holding onto talents or gifts that could be more valuable than we imagine, and perhaps, all we need is a moment to let them shine.
