“The Clock That Never Lied”

“He Thought He Had Time. He Was Wrong.”

By Irfan stanikzai Published 7 months ago 3 min read

1. Prologue: The Wasted Clock

There was a clock on his wall—ticking, always ticking. But for him, it was just background noise. He often joked, “Time waits for no man… but it’ll surely wait for me.” His name was Omar, and he believed tomorrow was infinite.

2. Youth: All the Time in the World

As a teenager, Omar had dreams bigger than the sky—he wanted to write books, start a business, help his parents, and travel the world. But every time opportunity knocked, he whispered: “Not now. Later.”

His teachers praised his intelligence. “Omar, if you only focused, you could be extraordinary!” they’d say.

But he’d smile and reply, “There’s time. I’m just enjoying life.”

While his friends worked hard, applied for scholarships, and hustled in their free time, Omar stayed in bed till noon, watched endless series, and scrolled through social media with dead eyes and a fake smile.

3. Twenties: The Comfort of Delay

At 25, Omar had achieved nothing he had dreamed of. He still lived at home, unemployed, blaming the economy, the government, his family—everyone but himself.

One night, his childhood friend, Sami, visited him.

“Omar, I started a tech company. We’re hiring. You’re smart—join us.”

Omar yawned. “Sounds cool. But I’m not ready yet. Let me sort out a few things first.”

Sami looked at him with pity. “You’ve been sorting things for years.”

Omar laughed it off. “Relax, bro. I still have time.”

4. Thirties: The Shrinking Window

Years passed. Friends got married. Built careers. Raised families. Moved abroad. And Omar?

Still home. Still dreaming. Still lying to himself.

One evening, while sitting in his room surrounded by unopened books and dusty notebooks, he saw a Facebook post:

“Sami passed away in a car crash. Funeral tomorrow.”

The world froze. Omar stared at the screen for hours. His best friend—the one who tried to lift him—was gone.

That night, the clock on the wall ticked louder. For the first time, it sounded terrifying.

5. Realization: The Time That Wasn’t

At 36, Omar tried to change. He bought online courses. Wrote a few pages of a novel. Applied for jobs. But the world had moved on.

He was no longer the promising youth people once believed in—he was a man forgotten by time. Employers wanted experience. Publishers wanted polished stories. Investors wanted fresh energy.

He knocked on doors—but most were already closed.

He whispered to himself in the dark: “I thought I had time…”

6. Regret: The Silent Punishment

Omar grew older. His hair turned grey. His eyes, once full of dreams, were now hollow.

He often sat in the park, watching young people rushing with purpose. He envied them, but he knew their secret—they were using the time he had wasted.

Once, a teenage boy sat beside him and said, “You look like someone who’s seen life.”

Omar smiled bitterly. “I’ve seen what happens when you ignore life.”

He told the boy: “You know what’s cruel about time? It’s the most loyal enemy. It never lies. It just watches you waste it—and then punishes you with truth.”

7. The End: The Clock Stops

One winter morning, the neighbor found Omar motionless in his room, sitting in his chair, eyes open, notebook on his lap.

He had written only one sentence:

“If you wait for the perfect time, you’ll wait forever.”

The clock beside him had stopped ticking.

It was 3:17 AM.

Moral:

We are not promised tomorrow. Time does not stop, pause, or rewind. It doesn’t shout—it whispers. And if you don’t listen, it leaves you behind.

Omar’s story is not rare. It’s around us—in every wasted day, in every “I’ll do it tomorrow.”

The tragedy isn’t death. It’s unlived life.
