Despite having established protocols for patient care, hospitals often prioritize documentation over urgent and emergency situations, putting patients' lives at risk. In critical moments, timely intervention is crucial, yet rigid guidelines can hinder swift action.
In emergency situations, patients require immediate attention, but instead, they are often delayed due to cumbersome documentation processes. This unnecessary bureaucratic hurdle can have devastating consequences, leading to loss of precious time and, tragically, loss of life.
I'd like to share a personal experience that profoundly shook my confidence in seeking hospital care…..!!
On October 23, 2024, I was abruptly awakened by a roommate's frantic cry for help. Rushing to the parlor, I found my friend, colleague, and roommate struggling to breathe on the floor. The scene left me speechless and disoriented.
Thankfully, my other roommates and bedmate were already attending to her, attempting to stabilize the situation. Despite their efforts, her condition worsened, and she requested that we bid her mother farewell.
This haunting plea made me realize the urgency of the situation, and I knew we needed immediate medical attention."
As I heard her say 'farewell,' I felt a chill run down my spine. The weight of that word unsettled me, and I was paralyzed with fear. Normally, I would spring into action, rushing her to the hospital without hesitation. But in that moment, confusion and anguish consumed me.
I was overwhelmed with emotions , sadness, frustration and helplessness. My usual composure was replaced by uncertainty, leaving me questioning what to do next.
The search for medical attention continued as the enigmatic illness persisted. With growing urgency, we scoured the area for a ride to the hospital. I walked along the road, preoccupied with worry, scanning for any available transportation.
Just when hope seemed dwindling, a selfless individual stepped forward, offering to drive her to the clinic. Grateful for this kindness, my friends and I trailed behind in another vehicle, our minds racing with concern for her health.
As we arrived at the hospital, the gravity of the situation became alarmingly clear. One of our friends sprinted inside to alert the medical staff, pleading for urgent help. The girl's life hung in the balance, her breathing was faint, and her vitality was ebbing away.
Simultaneously, another friend rushed into the hospital to procure a wheelchair, essential for transporting her weakened body. Her weight and incapacitation made it impossible for her to walk, and every precious moment counted
A nurse emerged to assess the situation, we expected empathy and urgency, but to our shock, she seemed dismissive.
There's nothing serious here,' she said nonchalantly. 'Is this the person you claimed wasn't breathing? I thought it was a life-threatening emergency, but it appears she's just pretending.'
Her callous response left us stunned, I was horrified. 'How can you say that?' I thought. 'Someone's life is hanging in the balance, and you're implying they're faking it?' Her insensitive remark left me appalled and frustrated."
After rushing her inside, we expected swift medical attention. Instead, the doctor left her unattended in the chair, prioritizing paperwork over her critical condition. I couldn't understand the delay. Why not stabilize her first, ensuring she could communicate effectively, before requesting documentation?
Why the lengthy process?' I wondered. 'Why not prioritize her care, ensuring she's stable enough to provide necessary information?'
The Hippocratic Oath dictates “saving lives takes precedence”. Yet, my roommate sat motionless, neglected. This appalling display of incompetence and indifference to human life left me dismayed."
This disturbing experience isn't an isolated incident. I recall my previous visit to this hospital, when I sought care for my own health issues. Shockingly, they neglected me to the point where my life was at risk.
If not for the timely intervention of a friend who worked there, saving me from the abyss. The memory of that harrowing ordeal left an indelible mark on me"
