Sunrise

Rising with the sun and remembering the wisdom of the moon

By Mia WatanabePublished about a year ago 4 min read

Sunrise is the beginning of a new day. A fresh start. The sun comes beaming up over the pink or blue or orange ocean shining and ready for a new day. The sun will always shine. Are you always shining? Or are you more like the moon, waxing and waning in your fullness? Whether or not you’re more like the sun or the moon, remember that your light is infectious. When someone’s light is shining bright it’s hard to not catch on to this energy and shine with them.

Unless you’re an unhappy and jaded person. Sometimes people’s light is triggering for others. Have you ever had a moment in your life where you were shining but people were trying to dim your light? This has happened to me before, many times. I find some people are just really negative and they want other people to come down to their level. So they will pull you down with them. It’s up to you to keep shining your light throughout the hits you may get to your effervescence and stay true to your lightness.

I think it’s really important to note that it’s not always possible to shine like the sun all the time. Remember, even we get a break from the sun as night falls and the moon dots the sky. Too much of a good thing is no good for you. So we have night and day, yin and yang, dark and light. The moon reflects the sun in a beautiful way, so we have light on the darkest nights. Except when she nears close to new moon, we are plunged into darkness. We are asked to renew ourselves like a fresh seed in the dark soil. Ready to grow roots into the ground and unfurl like magic.

Do you ever create rituals for yourself? It could be a new moon ritual of journaling and manifesting your desires to come. It could be watching the sunrise or sunset every day. It could be a full or new moon ritual. It could be a tea ceremony where you are putting gentle awareness into your actions. Or it could be a cacao ceremony where you are opening your heart chakra and channeling intentions into your drink as you sip. Cacao ceremonies are so much fun and often I have done them with dance mixed into it. Celebrating through dance is such a wonderful thing. To move and groove your body to the beat and feel the music deep in your bones. It’s pure bliss. Bodies connecting on the dance floor shuffling around to the ebbs and flows of the music.

Music heals the soul. It ignites our heart and sets it alight. How many times have you heard a song that deeply moved you, how powerful that can be. For a while when I was unwell, I wasn’t even listening to music. It was too triggering for me as I felt like everyone was living their lives and I was just stuck. I didn’t want to hear any stories told through song because it reminded me that I felt I wasn’t living my life.

This is because I wasn’t doing any art, music, dance or play. I wasn’t going to the beach and getting my feet in the sand, my body in the water and the sun on my skin. I wasn’t going hiking in the mountains or walking by the ocean. I wasn’t reading books or writing stories. I was lost and confused. It was my dark night of the soul. Where I relinquished everything that made me me and came back to pure nothingness. There was a lot of pain in these moments. Physical, mental and emotional. Probably even spiritual.

My spirit was dying because I wasn’t doing anything that I was passionate about. I had forgotten my passions. My hobbies. My desires. I lost it all to the great abyss. So I dove in there to try and find it. It was dark and cold and lonely. And deeply scary. But I made it out eventually with the help of family and friends. And a hell of a lot of self work and self growth. I have transformed from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. Metamorphosised. I am now spreading my wings and flying with presence, power and passion. And boy, does it feel good.

I watch the sunrise every morning while writing. Stories about life and loss and everything in between. If you have any themes you’d like me to explore, please comment them below. Sometimes it’s one word like Joy or Love and sometimes it’s a phrase like Living Courageously or An Artful Life. The options for writing are endless. Much like the possibilities for that first sliver of sun peeking over the horizon, limitless. So if you’re feeling stuck in life, maybe you too are stuck in the great abyss, I urge you to change your morning routine. Get up early, have a cup of tea and watch the sunrise. It will inspire and change the way you think and the way you go about your day to day tasks. When we rise with the sun, we are naturally stepping into the day with purpose. Enjoy the sunrises to come!

Sending aloha,

Mia
