Because of my own extraordinary experiences with imaginary Shadows, I have a Challenge prompt for all of you.
In recent years, my fascination with the little shadow that follows around my feet has piqued. I have wondered and wondered about what shadows really are, the scientific explanation for them aside. And now that Halloween, a holiday in which everyone dresses up and steps outside into the shadows to go on their hunts for selective, delicious candy dishes, is on the rise, I have decided to put these wonderings to use.
I have made a Challenge prompt, if anyone would like to participate. However, because I am only one small person (only a sole ninth-grader), there will be no definite winner. If one would like to take it upon oneself to designate a winner using the Challenge entries (if any) that pop up in the comments, one is welcome to. Otherwise there is no cash prize.
What is my prompt for you?
It's quite simple.
Personify shadows.
A two-word prompt that is most easy to follow. There are "requirements," as I would not like to read a story in which the said personified shadow has no realistic personality and is only a blob telling a sad story, and I will list them for you here, but do not take them all directly to heart. They are requirements as much as they are to boost your Train of Thought.
- You must have at least three personified shadows, each with different personalities. An exception to this rule is if you take the time to explicitly spell out the personalities of a thousand shadows collectively-- then you have overdone your job, and hats are off to you.
- You must give your personified shadows ages. How old are they? Are they infants? Children? Barely old enough to speak? Are they ageless? Timeless? Do they transcend the limits of our universe? Let yourself run wild.
- You must describe their looks. Are they horned? Devilish? Angelic? Do they have tails, or ears that stick up out of their heads? Do they purposefully match the shape of their selected human, and in their spare time do they transform into a personal shape of preference?
- You must describe what they like to do. What do these shadows do at nighttime, when their human is asleep? Do you think they wander the Earth in search of a purpose? Are they plotting an extinction for the human race? Do they love us, or hate us-- or perhaps a strange mixture of the two? Imagine looking through the eyes of a shadow, and consider how you fare throughout your days and nights of endless life.
- Your story of shadows must be over 1,000 words. If this is unmanageable and it is in the 900s, I will take it, but try to write a story with solidity that expands beyond 1,000 words.
Following these four requirements are some basic rules. If you are an avid Vocal user like myself, you will see that these rules are often everywhere, and more often being disobeyed than not. Hopefully your excitement will not be dwindled by these measly regulations.
1. Please do not use excessive foul language. Please. I would happily read all of your entries, but do not fill them with swears and curses, if you will. Only a few, if you absolutely must.
2. No AI-generated content, excluding cover images. The story must be made by you. By human hands, writing and writing away.
3. No explicit content. Period. Capiche?
And those are it. One prompt, five requirements, and three rules. Easy to follow, eh?
We'll see. I will be checking the comments section frequently for entries. The deadline is October 31st, Halloween night, considering the occasion of this shadowy prompt.
If you would like to see my example for this Challenge prompt, you may find that at this link.

Thanks for sharing your idea! Not the type of thing I usually write, but it will be interesting to read.
Oo this is an awesome prompt!!
I think I feel like bringing out some of my own shadows, that sounds deep. ;) I'll shoot for Halloween night to post, depending on work schedule and my other projects.
Chloe, you definitely have the wheels turning in my head. And I love your ideas. In fact, you should be hired on Vocal immediately!
