Writing Under the Midnight Moon

Midnight!

How I love this quiet time when the rest of the household is asleep. This is my time to write, be creative, relax!

I’m free. I own this hour!

Sometimes I sneak out of bed and sit alone to gaze at the midnight moon, dancing in the sky. I imagine cloaked travelers sojourning on horseback or children hiding in the shadows of the great oaks. Vampires sitting in the trees or the fae beyond the veil.

I’ll wrestle with an unruly character or write them off the page. My pen is mightier than their paper sword most nights of the week.

If I was brave, I’d wander in the darkness and gaze at the stars above. I’d run barefoot through the frozen grass and dance with my favorite character. Which one would it be?

Tis silliness, this witching hour.

I’ve longed for this moment throughout the day. Phone calls, meetings, dinner, and grandchildren! Mothers! Daughters! Sons! And Husbands! Chaos encroaching at every corner. No time to call my own.

How many tales can I spin before my eyes grow weary and my dreams take control? Does it matter, so long as I soak up the moments I’ve been given?

Weave the tale! Spin the words upon the page! Clashing swords and curses flying overhead. The situation untangled for the moment! Fourteen pages later, what trouble will I drop them into? A vampire’s kiss! An unwanted fated mate! A thousand possibilities for me to choose.

When my fingers falter on the keyboard, and my thoughts fade to darkness, it’s time to crawl back into bed and rest my tired brain. If only it was that easy!

I fight back!

I don’t want to sleep!

I’ve left a tale undone! What if it unfolds without me? My characters decide their own fate?

No! No! No!

I must hold my end of the bargain and see this tale to the end! I can’t have characters running amok through the night! What if they wake up the dreamers? Or the baby? That would be an unforgivable disaster.

My head is nodding and I’ve typed the same words incorrectly fourteen times, but I’m not giving up. This tale will be twisted, rearranged and finished by two a.m.!

Finally! Last dot dotted! Last plot plotted.

I pull my blankets around me and settle my head on the corner of the pillow. I close my eyes and give in to my exhaustion, feeling like I’m floating across the land.

Sweet oblivion to the world surrounding me until some rouge invades my dreams.

How many nights will he continue to show up behind my eyelids and trespass my solitude? Tomorrow, he’ll sing his last song after I rearrange his storyline. Straight to the Netherworld for his crimes.

I try to push past him but he follows from one dream sequence to the next, until at last I stumble out of bed and grab an elixir to start my day.

Hazelnut permeates the air as my computer whirls to life, and I stare out the window, longing for midnight!

Readers,

I hope you enjoyed my silly take on a part time writers struggle to find time to spin tales and wrestle with her characters!

There is something truly special to be able to write at night, probably because the distractions and worries of the day are set aside. I find myself more relaxed and able to spin my tales with ease.

That said, I’d rather be writing than editing!
