KIIT Student Death: Tension erupted on the campus of the KIIT (Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology) in Odisha yesterday when a third-year student from Nepal was found dead in her hostel room. Authorities said BTech student Prakriti Lamsal committed suicide. Late last night, dozens of Nepali students gathered and protested, at which point they claimed they had been evicted from campus.

Postings on social media alleged that Lamsal was allegedly getting harassed by her former boyfriend. A cousin also filed a complaint alleging that a university male student was blackmailing her, leading to her hang death.

Police on KIIT Student Suicide Case on Campus

KIIT Student Death: The police have lodged a case against a male student, for allegedly instigating in the suicide of a female student, PINAK MISHRA DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, BHUBANESWAR.

“The accused student is in police custody and subjected to interrogation. The police have seized the mobile phone, laptop, and other gadgets of the deceased woman. We are undertaking a scientific investigation into the matter,” he said.

A senior official also appealed to the students to keep peace on the campus as their protest led to disturbances late last night. Two platoons of police personnel were deployed to control the situation. Regarding the scenario, the university had asked students from Nepal to clear the institution, following which Nepali students were put in two buses and dropped at the Cuttack Railway Station this morning.

“The University is closed Since Die for all the International students from Nepal. They are hereby directed to vacate the University Campus immediately.” Such read a notice shared in social media.

However, a release issued soon afterward requested all Nepalese students “to return to the campus and resume the classes”.

“The KIIT administration has taken all-out efforts to restore the normalcy in the campus and hostels to resume the academic activities,” it said.

Anil Prasad Yadav, a student from Nepal, told reporters at the railway station they were thrown out of their hostel.
