As Delhi prepares for the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2024, significant traffic restrictions, alternative routes, and parking guidelines have been put in place to ensure the smooth conduct of events and to maintain security across the city. Here’s a comprehensive guide to navigating the city during this period.
Airspace Restrictions
In the lead-up to and on Independence Day, the flying of sub-conventional aerial platforms such as paragliders, UAVs, hot air balloons, and other similar devices is strictly prohibited in Delhi. This measure is in place to prevent any security breaches and will remain effective until the conclusion of the Independence Day events.
Items Prohibited at the Event
Attendees of the Independence Day function are advised not to bring certain items to the venue. This includes cameras, binoculars, remote-controlled car keys, umbrellas, handbags, briefcases, transistors, cigarette lighters, tiffin boxes, water bottles, and lunch boxes. The restrictions are intended to expedite security checks and ensure the safety of all participants.
Major Road Closures
Several key roads in Delhi will be closed from 4 AM to 11 AM on Tuesday, August 15, 2024. These include:
- Netaji Subhash Marg
- Lothian Road
- SP Mukherjee Marg
- Chandni Chowk Road
- Nishad Raj Marg
- Esplanade Road and its Link Road
- Ring Road from Rajghat to ISBT
- Outer Ring Road from ISBT to IP Flyover
Alternative Routes
Commuters traveling between north and south Delhi should consider the following alternative routes:

- Kautilya Marg
- SPM Marg

- Mandir Marg

For east-west travel, use these routes:
- NH-24
- Nizamuddin Khatta
- Barapula Road

Bridge Closures
- Old Iron Bridge and Geeta Colony Bridge will be closed.
- The DND Flyway, NH-24 (NH-9), Yudhister Setu, Signature Bridge, and Wazirabad Bridge will remain open for access to the Ring Road.
Restrictions on Goods Vehicles and Buses
- Goods vehicles will not be allowed to operate between Nizamuddin and Wazirabad bridges from midnight on August 12 to 11 AM on August 13.
- Interstate buses between Maharana Pratap ISBT and Sarai Kale Khan ISBT will also be restricted during the same time frame.
- City buses, including those operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), will not operate on the Ring Road from midnight on August 12 to 11 AM on August 13. Buses coming from various parts of the city that usually take routes through Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Tilak Marg, and other central areas will need to use alternative roads.
Parking Restrictions
Vehicles without appropriate parking labels should avoid parking in the following areas:
- C-Hexagon, India Gate
- Copernicus Marg
- Mandi House
- Sikandra Road
- W Point, A Point, Tilak Marg
- Mathura Road, BSZ Marg
- Netaji Subhash Marg, JL Nehru Marg
- Ring Road between Nizamuddin Khatta and ISBT Kashmere Gate
- Outer Ring Road from Nizamuddin Khatta to ISBT Kashmere Gate via Salimgarh Bypass
