I'm a Lover of Words

Are you, too?

A page from my journal

I’m a logophile, can we be friends?

I can spend hours learning the etymology of the word and be fascinated by how I can apply it in my life.

Though with the current 171, 476 words in the English language, and this is according to the second Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, I still feel that there are not enough words to accompany life’s mysteries.

Words to evoke the feelings we have within especially when overwhelming emotions arise. Like when we're angry and sad, happy and tired, want to speak but don't have the courage to do it.

These are just some of the emotions that we feel almost every day of our lives.

Hence, I write.

It has been my solace. Like my anchor when I'm lost.

I write in an attempt to describe the vague adventures of today.

I write to speak my heart’s voice.

I write the words my mouth can’t enunciate.

I write to let my mind rest.

I write because it’s the time that I feel mattered, listened and belonged.

I write because it speaks me. And it comforts me.

Not from the audience alone, but from my creator.

I’m well aware these are crafted from an idealistic point of view.

But I believe that it’s pointless to search for perfect ideas in this imperfect world.

So, I write from within.

Only within myself can I find perfection, sanity, peace, love, and their friends.

Also, sadness, despair, anger, and their peers.

Using these overwhelming emotions, varying journeys, and life’s enigma, I try my best to put them into words.

“Try” is the keyword as I know I can’t encapsulate everything in a word, a phrase, or a sentence.

With these in hand, I hope that my stories evoke something in the reader. I’m not wishing for something transformational.

I just hope for a tiny spark of magic that makes our existence more interesting and lighter to live on.

To conclude, let me borrow the words of Elizabeth Gilbert that pushed my inner pen to keep on rolling.

“If I’m not actively creating something, then chances are I am probably actively destroying something-myself, a relationship, or my own peace of mind”.

I know I’m still a novice, but I’m here for the taking.

Just like in life, I’ll be its student forever in writing.
