Finding Time To Write In A Busy World

Adding strategy to creativity

Life is demanding.

There are only so many hours in each day. Many of them are already assigned to the different tasks of life from jobs, commuting to and from said job, basic self-care, and taking care of family members, and pets, and somewhere in there we squeeze in the time for a few meals and snacks and a handful of hours are left to sleep.

It can be hard to try and squeeze in just a little bit of writing when there is an endless task list waiting with your name on it - hard, but not impossible.

Here are a few ways to bring writing into your daily life and make it part of your routine.

Prioritize Your Writing

This one is sometimes hard to swallow, but more often than not when a writer comes to me and asks how I fit writing into my life, especially when I first started while working 50+ hours a week as a retail manager the answer was always the same.

Writing isn't one of those activities that you first fall into as easily as one would fall into bingeing a new TV show.

You have to prioritize it and make time for it.

Somewhere within the 24 hours you are given you can find thirty minutes to write - or you can make them.

Combine Writing with Daily Activities

Writing doesn't have to be something done in a darkened room with low-light candles and an ancient typewriter that makes more noise than it's worth.

Writing can be done in something simple as a notebook you carry with you anywhere you go and write when you have the moments between other activities to spare.

Write between tasks at work in the time that you would normally scroll through social media feed, while you're at lunch, or in the few minutes you're sitting in your car before you begin your drive home.

Write in the downtime while you're waiting for the pasta water to boil or for the few minutes you are brushing your teeth.

Even if you manage a few moments here and there throughout your day - in the end, they all add up to something and something is always better than nothing.

Delegate when Possible

There is nothing wrong with asking for help when it is needed.

If the burden you are carrying is too heavy to be able to fit in even a few minutes of writing time a day then there is no shame in asking for a hand from friends, or family, or letting your children watch an extra episode of that show they like while you scribble or type up some words.

If there are resources out there to help make your life easier and allow you to accomplish the task of writing your novel, there is no reason why you shouldn't grab onto them.

You've got this.

Best,

B. xo xo
