Anne Bernays and Pamela Painter — What if? Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers prompts —

The Exercise — With this caution and exhortation in mind, write a sex scene for a story in which you know your fictional characters well.

The Objective - To gain access to this rich material indirectly so that this universal experience can feel singular, as though coming to be for the first time in history.

Geri knew that tonight would be the night that they had sex. They were now engaged, and she promised him that this time would be the time. They had done some heavy petting many times, but she never once allowed intercourse.

Geri was worried about tonight, as his brother would tell her of all of his exploits before they met. He called him a he whore, prior to their getting together. She wasn't sure that the only reason they were together was due to the conquest. She was a virgin and let him know she wouldn't have sex until married or at least engaged.

She knew very little about sex, and yet, she was confident that he would know how to handle the situation. After all, he was older and had the experience.

After dinner and a movie, Geri excused herself to get into the nightgown Rick had given her. He waited for her in the bedroom. He was under the covers with no clothes on when she approached him. He explained to her how excited he was to finally have all of her.

He talked about how excited he was to marry her and to have their children. All of this talk didn't help. She let him know just how nervous she was, and he stopped talking and invited her into the bed with him. He told her that he was nervous too, and that was what all the talk was about.

She relaxed when he said that and slowly moved into the bed. As they were kissing and then getting to the point of having intercourse, they felt the bed move, and it suddenly went crashing to the floor. She screamed, and he quickly jumped up to see what had happened.

One leg of the bed had broken, and he figured it was one of his brothers who had fixed it so that it would happen! Rick was upset until Geri began laughing. He couldn't help but do the same.

They laughed and laughed, as he said, he would get them for that. They then pulled the mattress onto the floor and made love. No more worries, no more being nervous or concerned. They were both enjoying the experience.

I love this! I really liked how you kept the focus on emotion and connection rather than just the act itself.

What a story and you have another area in which to write. Great job.

What a great story, Denise. I loved it. Three parts about the bed collapsing brought an element of light relief, giving it yet another dimension. I am slowly working on writing my story for " Filthy" as part of my personal challenge to write at least one story for the community. I don't have a problem writing about sex, and I started to write some erotic short stories a few years ago. You have given me some Dutch courage to put it back on the list.
