“What in the world are you going to do with a B.A. in English?” (Avenue Q)

Many an English scholar has posed this question so poignant it is the title of a song in a hit Broadway musical. The answer is wider than many would expect. Words are key to success in the working world. How a person is presented can be seen in how they speak and deliver themselves. The difference between a successful job interview and a failed one could be how you answer the interviewer's question. To start successfully, it is important to prepare for said interview and take a note from an English Major’s book by paying attention to your words.

Once the workplace door has been opened the words are still important. Talking to coworkers and your boss affects the trajectory of your success. For example, if something offensive is said or constant complaints are made it puts you in a bad light. On the other hand, if you express yourself positively and thoughtfully then it is more likely to be respected and rewarded. When it comes to success it is key to speak, thoughtfully, and with consideration when in a professional environment.

Words are important because they leave a lasting remark on the listener and the reader. Not only can they be misused in the spoken context but how language is perceived on paper can impact the workplace. Some might assume writing is only important for larger documents, but everyday communications are key as well. For example, accidental emails are used in TV shows and movies as a comedic bit but it is a real concern. When writing at work to co-workers and higher-ups it should be taken seriously and respectively. After all, the difference between what is said in a quick email could result in a negative impact on your career. Use written language to express yourself thoughtfully and concisely. Even if it might seem obvious it is key to remember that the workplace isn’t a setting for chat speak or lingo. There are even browser apps that help correct grammar and spelling within emails, such as Grammarly. Use every tool in your belt to be successful.

It is natural to struggle at times with not only what to write about but it is also difficult to decide on how to write the piece. More often than not it is the actual starting of the writing process that proves extremely difficult for many writers no matter their experience level. That is why whenever I do have an idea I write it down immediately so even if I cannot start working on the piece immediately I can go back to the list and have the ideas as a resource to help me get the process started.

There are so many words used every day that sometimes they are taken for granted. For example, one of the conditions I suffer from affects my vocal cords to the point where I not only am unable to speak, I also can't breathe. So, writing is the only way on those days I can communicate with the world around me. For a girl who likes to ramble, this can be tough but it also pushes me to be creative in every task. This can be seen in the work that I create and the written language that I never take for granted. The lesson I know to be true is that utilizing the best application of the written word can be the difference between a successful career or being out of the job and being unable to communicate what's lingering on one's lips.
