One beginning in the land of Luminaria,

the country where lights swirled nightly across the heavens and strange creatures roamed as they wished, promised an adventure young Elara, the light-hearted and tender girl, always kept a weather eye for. One day, while rummaging in her grandmother's attic, she came upon some really old and dusty chest. Inside there was an intricate map shaking with some otherworldly kind of luminescence. Studded with these weird symbols, the map bore a strange inscription locating that which the crystal of fable, the Stardust Crystal, allows. Her heart started to race in apprehension, for it was no scavenger hunt.

In the sureness that she, together with her faithful companions, would indeed uncover the secrets of the Stardust Crystal, Elara set out to find them. First to her aid came Whiskers—her inquisitive and agile cat, which had a way of getting into, and out of, tight situations. Always standing at his side was Nutmeg, the talking squirrel whose quick wits had made him something of a legend in the forest. They would prove to be the most unlikely, though very apt, companions on a hunt that in turn would prove to be as dangerous as it was exciting.

It all began right in the heart of the Enchanted Forest,

where the tall whispering trees whispered secrets of the past and the air was so enchanted. Deeper and farther into the forest, they chanced upon a group of mischievous fairies. Their sparkling wings and glittering eyes are makers of riddles and wicked pranks with travelers who go their way. Ready to take them through were the fairies, with the friends, with but one condition: they should be able to solve some cross-cross riddles that were ready to be faced by the children's fairy queen.

Nutmeg, with his sharp wit, and Whiskers, with his tenacity, showed great resolve to face their test. Quite naturally, in the way of best species against their natural kind of foe, Nutmeg solved all the riddles and Whiskers led gracefully to escape all the traps the Shee placed in their course. Their teamwork and resourcefulness got the fairies' vote of approval, and the woodland creatures managed to coax them farther along their path to the center of Riopia: to the Dragon's Keep.

The Dragon's Keep was an imposing fortress that looked out over the jagged mountains, wreathed in mist and mystery. Up in the front of the keep stood a large-scaled, iron-tough dragon named Thorne, with as rough a temperament to match his own hide. He was the keeper of the Stardust Crystal and would not be easily persuaded by a meager request. He set Elara, Nutmeg, and Whiskers in front of a test to create a proof of their hearts and souls. Each of them had to stand against his or her most profound terrors. Elara – the fear of defeat. Nutmeg – insecurities. Whiskers – loss. Though the ordeal was hard, it so happened that the courage and confidence in each other would be enough to surmount their personal test.

After victory,

Elara and those who had accompanied her were conducted far beneath the keep, into the secret cavern. There, in its depths subject to soft, ethereal light, sat the Stardust Crystal. When they touched it, brilliant pulsing light across all Luminara lit, renewing and rebalancing the very magic of the world. Thorne, still surly and lonely as ever, tipped his hat in appreciation, revealing one deep secret: what was truly magical about the stone wasn't the stone itself but the light that came from within the heart of those who believed in its magic.

As they returned home, they were greeted as heroes. And Elara, ever more. Flourishing Luminara shines brighter than ever. More to the point, the adventure had not only brought magic to their world but reminded people of the lessons their experiences had taught them: real bravery could only arise when one faced their fear with kindness, courage, and friendship that could actually be found deep within loyalty and collaboration. Perhaps deeper does the magic lie within the heart of those who believe in it.

But in the end, it was Elara and her friends' story that everybody came to hold dear, for Elara reminded them all that magic was wondrous, but more so, that found in others brought them together and made them believe.

I like the name nut-meg for the squirrel. A very uplifting and wholesome fantasy piece, I could tell every word was carefully chosen and I love the fact that it ended with ‘believe’.
