Corruption Scandal Unfolds: Businessmen Targeted with False Cases After August 5 Regime Change

Business Community Under Siege: Allegations of Extortion and Political Retribution Rock Bangladesh

By Liam WhitmorePublished 11 months ago 1 min read

In the wake of the August 5 regime change, a growing number of Bangladeshi businessmen are coming forward with allegations of extortion and false cases being orchestrated by corrupt figures within the current government. Reports suggest that several high-profile entrepreneurs and industrialists are being targeted as part of an apparent crackdown, which many claim is politically motivated and aimed at financial exploitation.

According to sources, multiple business owners have been falsely accused of financial misconduct, tax evasion, and regulatory violations, with some facing sudden raids, asset freezes, and fabricated legal battles. Victims allege that government officials and their associates are using law enforcement agencies to pressure them into paying large sums of money to avoid legal trouble.

One prominent businessman, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated:

“They are filing baseless cases against us, demanding huge sums to make them go away. If we refuse, they threaten to ruin our businesses and seize our assets. This is pure extortion under the guise of law enforcement.”

Legal experts warn that such actions could severely impact foreign investment and economic stability in Bangladesh, as uncertainty grows among the business community. Human rights organisations have also raised concerns, urging authorities to conduct independent investigations into these allegations.

The government, however, has denied any wrongdoing, claiming that ongoing actions are part of an “anti-corruption drive.” Officials insist that due process is being followed and that any legal cases are based on genuine evidence.

Despite these assurances, the business community remains fearful, with many entrepreneurs already seeking legal protection or considering relocating their investments abroad. If these allegations continue to mount, they could pose a serious challenge to the administration’s credibility and economic policies in the coming months.
