Colors Within the Dust

I remember it being white; Idk how it got yellow, haha

By Maryam BatoolPublished about a year ago 1 min read

I can't believe how much I loved kitchen sets when I was a kid.

I used to have a collection of every cartoon, and Dora was my favorite one.

I found this one in my old house, so I brought it back home.

This lone piece reflected my entire childhood in front of my eyes.

My girl cousins used to bribe me with snacks to play with the mini pots that were in it.

I used to make my heart believe that when I put my food in this mini microwave, it actually became hot.

And then I used to tell my cousins, "Look, the food's ready now!" For some reason, they used to pretend it was really hot.

I remember arranging glass plates and cups in the clear cabinet because I wanted to show them like some exhibition.

I can't believe the microwave is still working when I press the button, but of course, there's no heat, lol.

I remember how I used to put all the dirty dishes in the sink because I was a responsible cook.

I think I've washed so many dishes in my childhood that now I don't want to do it anymore.

I do remember how much I cried when I lost my frying pan. I was so upset that I said to Mom, "I won't eat unless I find my pan."

To which Mom said—actually, she didn't pay any attention to it.

It was lying in the dirt, but I found it like gold in my heart.

I felt emotional thinking that this "House" once used to be my "Home."

This set used to be a place where I showed my cooking skills.

Life is colorful—only if we choose to see the million shades of it.

It was my choice; I could've let it sit in the dirt because it's no use to me now.

But I chose to bring it back home.

I chose to bring back some childhood memories.

I chose to pick colors within the dust.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS.

My favorite line is “It was lying in the dirt, but I found it like gold in my heart.”

This was such a nostalgic and heartwarming read! It’s amazing how something as simple as a toy can hold so many precious memories.

You've captured the essence of cherishing the past while finding joy in the present. Absolutely lovely. Maryam u r vivid descriptions and heartfelt emotions make the story so relatable

  • "Life is colorful—only if we choose to see the million shades of it." My dad always tell me that, not verbatim, but something along those lines. I, unfortunately, only can see the parts of life where colour cannot penetrate. I only see the absence of colours. I truly admire people who are either unbothered by the part of life that are uncoloured or just cannot see those parts of life 🥲 Anyway, let's move away from my sappy story. I'm so glad you brought back the house that once used to be your home. Loved your poem!

The things we did as kids and the things that captivated our little lives. These days I doubt many young children would have the imagination to engage in such games. I must drag out a story I started last year (I can say that now) and finish it along a similar line.
