Yamaha R15 Evaluation Report

After tasting Apulia’s GPR125, both performance and configuration gave Andy a good impression at the time.

Today, what comes to us today is the Yamaha R15, which is the “mortal enemy” of GPR125, which is unbeatable in all aspects.

Before we are ready to comment on R15, let's take a look at the official promotional video of R15 (See the Video). In the video, Yamaha's current GP drivers Rossi and Lorenzo both personally endorsed R15. And stated that R15 inherited M1's sports gene.

At the beginning of its launch, Yamaha has already put the "noble" hat on the R15. The whole vehicle is imported with original packaging. It is sold in a limited edition of 500 units nationwide. The official price is 23,600 yuan and there is no official discount.

This is destined for it. , Only belongs to a small group of people who really like the R series. In terms of appearance alone, the R15 overall creates a very strong sense of movement. Large-area deflector for the entire vehicle. The high-drop front and rear split seats and the high rear rear show the strong YAHAMA R "gene" of R15 and the charm of R6 and the old R1.

On the front fork configuration, the R15 is equipped with front fork shock absorption, and its diameter and configuration are nothing special. The front brake disc adopts a fixed 267MM equipped with one-way dual-piston brake calipers. Such a combination of equipment looks relatively simple and simple, there are no bright spots, so this makes us look forward to his actual performance.

The spoiler covering a large area of the body is one of the most obvious status symbols of a sports car. The spoiler of the R15 is very similar to that of the same door brother R6. With the addition of Movistar's limited edition flowers, the whole car exudes a very strong GP "faner" .

Another "feature" of sports cars is that the headlights are closely connected to the spoiler, so most sports car headlights are very eye-catching and slender. Yamaha is no exception. Its headlamp shape is very similar to the previous 03 R1 headlamps. From another perspective, this is a classic continuation... But after all, it is a design more than ten years ago. The concept has some sense of outdated and inconsistent when put it now.

The rearview mirror is foldable, and there was a large-scale traffic jam on the way to the test site. It is extremely important that the rearview mirror is fully foldable when drilling the seam.

The "heart" of the Yamaha R15 is a cylinder with an actual displacement of 149.8cc equipped with DiASil. After repeated aluminum alloy coating treatment by the R&D center, the aluminum alloy is added with 20% silicon to create a hard and reliable cylinder wall.

Since aluminum has 3.1 times stronger heat dissipation capacity than iron, and aluminum is lighter than iron, the engine is lighter and the heat dissipation effect is better.

On the other hand, based on this technology, the entire cylinder can be made of aluminum, and the thermal conductivity is better. Based on good genes in technology, this 150CC engine can burst out the maximum power of 11.1kw/8500rpm and the maximum torque output of 13.2N.m/7500rpm. From the data point of view, it has almost reached the domestic 250CC car model.

The rear brake is equipped with a 208mm disc brake, and the brake caliper is a single-piston caliper from NISSIN. Compared with the front brake calipers, Andy believes that the NISSIN brake should be placed on the front brake. After all, the front brake bears more braking gravity than the rear brake. It may be because of cost considerations that there is no front brake equipped with Nissin. Let's take a look at his performance later.

The front wheel 90/80-17, rear wheel 130/70-17 tires are relatively coordinated on R15. Consumers now think that the wider the rear tire is, the better, they want the 250CC model to be equipped with 160 width The rear tires are enough to be domineering. But back to the real problem, it must meet the model and actual needs. From the configuration alone, the 130-wide rear tire is enough to configure the R15.

The appearance of the R15's instrument has a strong sense of combat, and the combination of digital display and pointer Andy thinks it would be better to put it on a sports car. R15's instrument is simple and clear without too many display functions, even the water temperature display does not have a Sudoku display, but there is a high temperature warning light on the top.

The LCD screen displays fuel consumption, kilometers, and driving speed. The pointer gauge shows the speed. In comparison, it is simple and simple. The R15's fuel tank has a capacity of 12L, which can be fully handled for short and medium-distance trips. For long-distance trips, the problem is not particularly serious in terms of fuel consumption. However, the shape of the fuel tank is not very compatible with the R15 front fender.

Compared with the front surround of the R15, the fuel tank is very compact, and it takes some time to adapt to this combination. But the advantage is that it can give the rider more leg space and comfortable riding space.

Dynamic evaluation:

R15's well-proportioned 12L fuel tank and 800mm seat height determine that it is inherently easy to drive, and it is more approachable than GPR125. Andy is 181cm tall and straddles the R15 and can fully touch the ground. Although it is equipped with a detachable handlebar, its riding triangle setting is not a pure sports car to lie forward, but a posture similar to the ninja250. Let's call it a touring sports car setting for the time being. It allows you to easily meet both aggressive driving and daily long-distance driving needs.

When you turn the key and ignite, the YAMAHA-style single-cylinder horseshoe sound will be transmitted to your ears. (Yamaha's single-cylinder engine will have a clear and pleasant sound like a horseshoe when idling) Although single-cylinder cars are inherently a drawback for voice control, the R15's exhaust sound is strong and powerful. The 150cc single-cylinder engine can do this is also very pleasing.

In terms of power performance, the R15 is still remarkable, although it is only a single-cylinder engine with an actual displacement of 149cc. But as Rossi and Lorenzo said, the taste of Yamaha R series can be radiated in this car. The engine performs well at low torque, and the power output is relatively delicate at 4,000 rpm. After 5,000 rpm, it started to be a little deliberate. Basically, the output at this stage is still comfortable in urban commuting driving, and there will be no insufficient low-torque performance.

If you want to take it to the wild, no problem! This is all you need to increase the speed to 8000 rpm, and its power output begins to explode. At this point, you will completely feel that this is not the power output that a 150cc car should have, which has greatly exceeded my expectations for it. But the passion is always short-lived, you can feel the beginning of trying hard when the speed reaches 9000.

The linear output determines its advantages in daily driving. Compared with GPR125, the low torque and linear output of R15 will let you experience the fun it brings to you in daily driving. Unlike GPR125, the speed must be pulled high to squeeze out its power. This kind of fun will allow novices to find the confidence and pleasure of driving from the moment they get in the car, and also makes the R15 car more approachable.

After entering the curve, thanks to the Deltabox frame and the curb weight of only 134kg, the R15 is very flexible and light in the curve. Even a novice can calmly deal with every corner.

When entering the S corner, the Deltabox's frame and the R15 front and rear shock absorber support have good rigidity, although it is more rigid than the GPR125 double-wing beam aluminum alloy frame. The performance is still slightly inferior, but it is already the top in this level of R15. Furthermore, the performance gap between the two frames is minimal.

The rear tires of the R15 have a very subtle feeling. When cornering, the tires start to become a little unstable after the car’s inclination angle is greater than 37 degrees. At this time, the car will give you feedback that my tires are not warm enough. Oh.

But if you can overcome the psychological barrier and keep pressing it down, the tire will regain its previous stability. I don't know if this is caused by the new car tires not being worn away. However, it is very necessary to replace a hot melt tire with better grip if you often take the R15 off the track.

Finally, comment on the R15's suspension and brakes. Let’s talk about the brakes. In terms of the R15 class and its weight, the R15’s brakes are already superior, and the brake foot feels more delicate, but if compared with GPR125, it is slightly inferior.

In the case of intense braking It's not as straightforward as the GPR125's brake performance, but fortunately the gap is not big. Andy is personally satisfied with the performance of the suspension.

The setting is biased towards daily driving. The rebound and support are based on comfort. Remember, the comfort is measured by sports cars, not to be compared with other models. It will become more calm and free when driving intensely, and the textured rebound will immediately become taut. This is very subtle. Compared to the suspension adjustment of the GPR125, it is still "approachable".

In fact, it is the same as mentioned in the article about driving GPR125 on the track. The GPR125 is more suitable for the track, while the R15 is more focused on low-torque, excellent rebound rigidity and shock absorption. , A comfortable riding triangle determines that it will be your approachable friend, the only thing that is not approachable is its price.

If you want to ask how to surpass GPR125, I think that after modifying the brakes, tires and suspension, its performance on the track is higher than that of GPR125. It is not always true who wins. In the end, I think everyone also has a constant standard for the two cars. Who to choose? And next time , we will talk about Yamaha Nmax !
