Hybrid cars come with diverse features, some are more popular for their fuel efficiencies, and others are known to offer superior reliability and performance. Unfortunately, there are hybrid cars that fall short of many desirable qualities we look for. With lots of options out there, it can be pretty difficult to separate the good hybrid vehicles from the not-so-good options. The hybrid vehicles covered below are eco-friendly but they are notorious for developing certain issues, buyers must have in mind.

Regardless of what you are looking for in an Hybrid car, you need to pay careful attention to their history. This review will give you an insight into some of the things you should check.

1. 2014 and 2015 Nissan Pathfinder HEV

Pathfinder hybrid options designed in 2014 and 2015 are notorious for developing issues with their braking systems. Similarly, some of them are also at high risk of developing electrical issues. Some owners of these hybrid cars reported less responsive brakes and electrical glitches in the navigation and infotainment systems. Some owners also reported issues like shuddering and vibration when these models are shifting. There have been few reports of these cars not accelerating after a panic stop. All these issues highlighted make these hybrid automobiles less reliable.

2. 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid

This is another hybrid vehicle you should probably stay away from buying. There is no doubt this car is fuel efficient, the few issues that have been reported on it make the car less desirable in some ways. Its transmission issue is one of the most common problems reported by owners. Owners reportedly experienced abrupt shifting which forced many to replace the whole transmission.

3. 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

This is the only plug-in hybrid minivan on the automobile market, and despite being an above-average EV car, there have been multiple recalls over issues with its battery. Owners have also reported issues with this car’s electrical system and that could be a major concern for the hybrid vehicle.

4. 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Volkswagen Tuareg Hybrid

This hybrid has issues with its speed and many of them had to be recalled. It was observed that there was no drainage under the hybrid’s battery causing it to short-circuit and in some instances catch fire. There were also issues with sunroof drains and faulty rear lid seals which were not assembled correctly from the factory. There were also a few occasions where recalls were initiated due to missing clips on the brake pedal pivot and leaks in fuel injection systems.

5. 2017 BMW X5 Hybrid

This is one hybrid with a strong reputation for high performance. It also comes with a luxurious cabin that makes it a premium option for users. According to online reviews, this hybrid car offers sporty handling and a comfortable ride. However, some buyers have reported issues with the brakes including pulsation effects. A few users also reported issues with the car’s calipers and antilock systems. A few users reported squeaking and occasional brake failure.

6. 2018 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid

Owners of the Chevrolet Malibu hybrid love it because of its spacious interior and excellent fuel economy. Unfortunately, some owners reported brake failures, and others reported issues with the car’s fuel sensors. Some users have also reported issues with reduced power that make it dangerous to drive on the highway. There has been a total of 6 recalls for this hybrid car since 2018 including the one for leaking transmission fluid. While this car has attracted some positive reviews, there remain reliability issues worth looking into.
