The New Honda Tundra is one of the most anticipated pickups in 2022. Honda, one of the top global automobile makers has arrived on the horizon with a reliable affordable new pickup aimed to perform and win over many customers all over the world.

The most luxurious Toyota pickup available is the 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone

The Honda Tundra is set to make a great comeback in 2022. The new model will be the generalist option in Honda's truck lineup, while the Ridgeline continues to do well as the smaller and more car-like 'ute of choice.

Without a high-end luxury vehicle, no selection of full-size pickup trucks would be complete. Simply put, some customers don't care about your vehicle having a bulky off-road attitude, loud mudding' tyres or bright red tow hooks to pull your vehicle out of a ravine after you got a little overzealous with your rock crawling. I mean, if you're a Texas oil mogul or a construction boss, are you going to show up to the Jobsite in a BMW 7 Series? For a large number of truck buyers, their truck is a status symbol, a luxury car. In my opinion, no.

Because of this, manufacturers of formerly utilitarian pickup trucks now offer pricey luxury upgrades; the most recent example is provided by Toyota. Despite dominating the mid-size truck segment with Tacoma, the company has never been successful in attracting customers in the full-size pickup segment. The 2022 Tundra has undergone a complete makeover to modernise Toyota's offering in a highly competitive market that is still dominated by the quasi-domestic automakers from GM, Ford, and Stellaris. The redesign also adds a new range-topping luxury trim known as the Capstone.

It sits above all other Tundra trims, including the Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition, and promises a full-on luxury experience. It was designed to compete with trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country, Ford F-150 Limited, and Ram 1500 Limited. Has it?

It Has the Goods

The 2022 Tundra Capstone is as loaded as one may anticipate, starting with the engine: The twin-turbocharged V-6 i-Force Max hybrid system, which is optional on other trims and produces 437 horsepower and 583 pounds-feet of torque, is standard on the Capstone. However, you also get special features like a motorised bed step, standard power running boards, and the first 22-inch rims ever installed on a Tundra. With its chunky, contemporary appearance that is a fantastic update from the old Tundra's look, it certainly looks the part of a real luxury vehicle along with its added external chrome-and-black trim, totally modernising Toyota's truck styling for a new generation of purchasers. Toyota will have succeeded if the future Tacoma looks as good as this one.

The new top Tundra drives as good as it looks, with a torquey hybrid powertrain delivering seamless power when needed and a twin-turbo V-6 that sounds more like a Subaru boxer engine than any Toyota V-6 I've ever heard. However, this extraordinarily loud snarl must be artificially produced. Additionally, the Capstone will be quieter than previous Tundras since it features acoustic glass on the front doors, which increases the likelihood that the engine noises are fake. Regardless of their sincerity, the powertrain has a smooth transition between electric and gasoline power, and it sounds and feels excellent.

But Is It Luxe Enough?

In terms of features, the Capstone qualifies as a high-end truck, but how opulent does it feel?

put it bluntly, it's about as pleasant as a mid-trim Ram 1500, which is the most opulent Toyota-branded car you can buy. According to us, the top Ram 1500 Limited continues to set the standard for luxury trucks thanks to its interior, which is furnished with opulent materials like high-quality leather, wood, and metal.

Contrarily, the materials used here are fine but not very remarkable. The interior of the Tundra Capstone is distinctively black and white leather, one of its enhancements, and it does have more surfaces covered in higher-quality materials, such as the shift knob and steering wheel. The panoramic moonroof is another lovely feature, however, it substantially reduces headroom in the backseat due to its operation. Because of the expanse of glass, this is the only full-size pickup I've ever sat in where the headliner is right up against my skull in the backseat.

The large new touchscreen is a big upgrade over Toyota's prior systems. It is a mammoth 14-inch horizontal unit affixed to the dash in an almost straight-up-and-down position. Similar to how its new multimedia system is a significant advancement in the competitive systems of today due to its features, functionality, and amazing clarity. However, due to its vertical orientation, it is also extremely reflective; if you are facing the sun, all you will see on the screen until you change orientation is the reflection of the white leather seats. Even though the white leather interior is lovely, I would probably choose darker hides to lessen the reflection problem.

The Tundra Capstone offers a premium truck experience, while it isn't necessarily a real luxury vehicle. Even with the standard adaptive suspension and rear air springs, the ride on those large 22-inch wheels is notably former even though it is quieter. Although the head-up display, heated and ventilated front and back seats, rear door sunshades, and heated steering wheel are all great additions, nothing about the Capstone makes it stand out from other luxury options from competitors. There is no innovative bed technology, like the Pro Power Onboard power supply outlets in Ford trucks, the split tailgate or bedside lockers in Ram trucks, or the carbon fibre truck bed in GMC trucks, for example.

The Finest Toyota Tundra Money Can Buy

After driving the new 2022 Tundra, it is abundantly evident to me that Toyota has found its niche and is increasingly content to just pursue customers who are already in the Toyota showroom to purchase a Tundra. Little about the new Tundra, whether it's a Capstone or not, will increase the likelihood that it will oust Chevy, Ford, or Ram with this revamped version, and Toyota is cool with that. Will a Ram 1500 Limited owner be impressed? No. Is it necessary? And no. Toyota has its market and devoted following, so it would be futile to try and persuade domestic-brand truck buyers to switch from their preferred vehicles.

However, countless devoted Tacoma owners may want to switch to a larger model, and returning Tundra owners with deep pockets who simply want to purchase the very best version of the most recent model will be happy with what Toyota is giving in the Capstone. The base price of a Tundra Capstone is $75,225 (with a hefty $1,695 delivery fee), so they'll need to have plenty of cash. My test vehicle cost $76,270 when the Advanced Package was selected (adaptive suspension, rear load-levelling air suspension, and 10-inch colour head-up display). Even though it's a high price for a pickup, it's in line with what other high-end vehicles these days cost. Additionally, it completes a vastly better array of vehicles for Toyota Tundra customers, which should keep them coming back for more.
