Durability, simplicity, and affordability are paramount when designing products intended for everyday use. Cyclists want reliability without being bogged down by unnecessary features or a steep learning curve. Additionally, ensuring that products are reasonably priced is crucial in an industry where cost remains a key factor in consumer decision-making. My approach has, therefore, always been to balance cutting-edge technology with practicality, delivering a solution that meets the real-world demands of cyclists.
After several iterations and extensive testing, we are proud to present the eKits electric-assist kit (e-rim.com/ekitsen). Our custom algorithm has been fine-tuned to support both 18V and 40V battery options, and it intelligently combines the motor Hall signals with data from an external pedal sensor. This arrangement enables a "pedelec" (pedal electric cycle) experience, similar to Yamaha’s highly regarded Pedal Assist System (PAS). By allowing the motor assistance to kick in naturally as the rider pedals, the eKits controller delivers a smooth and intuitive electric-assist experience. Our objective was to create a system that feels less like a motor suddenly taking over and more like a natural extension of the rider's own power.
3. **Battery**: Among the challenges we faced during development, refining the battery system was perhaps the most persistent. Finding a battery that meets requirements for weight, size, durability, and cost while also navigating the complex regulatory environment around battery transportation proved to be no easy feat. However, after much consideration and testing, we identified Makita rechargeable lithium batteries, which are widely available and commonly used in power tools across more than 40 countries. With Makita batteries, our eKits are not only more accessible but also provide a reliable power source that is easy to find, replace, and use. With the right tweaks to the motor and controller, we have optimized our system to run smoothly on these 18V Makita batteries, maintaining efficient performance while offering a flexible and practical battery solution.
While it's true that lowering the battery voltage results in reduced torque from the motor, this performance is still more than adequate to meet the demands of typical urban commutes, school trips, and other everyday transportation needs. For most users, the system’s power levels are sufficient to navigate daily routes with ease. Additionally, by selecting an 18V battery, we have been able to offer an affordable and accessible option for consumers who might be put off by the cost of higher-voltage alternatives.
