The beautiful island of Thailand is filled with many iconic landmarks, fantastic nature trails and an ancient culture. Nestled in the northern part of the country is Chiang Rai, which is a city that has lately been captivating countless visitors with its rich culture, breathtaking landscapes and a plethora of unique experiences. Unlike the bustling metropolis of Bangkok or the tourist-heavy atmosphere of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai offers travellers a peaceful yet captivating adventure.  This guide is a walkthrough of why this city has become a hotspot for travellers.

A City with a Lot to See

Chiang Rai has a collection of unique landmarks waiting to be explored.

Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple)

One of the most famous attractions in Chiang Rai, the Wat Rong Khun temple, which is commonly known as the white temple, is considered an architectural marvel. Designed by Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, this all-white temple symbolizes purity and enlightenment.

Wat Rong Suea Ten (The Blue Temple)

Known widely for its blue hues and delicate golden touch, Wat Rong Suea Ten is another masterpiece of modern Buddhist art. The Blue Temple’s interior also houses a pure white Buddha statue, which is a must-view for anyone visiting the temple.

Enjoying the Trees in Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai’s natural beauty is as compelling as its various landmarks. The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains, rolling rivers, and deep green foliage that is waiting to be explored.

Doi Tung Mountain

Home to the Doi Tung Royal Villa and the Mae Fah Luang Garden, this mountain is a testament to the late Princess Mother's efforts to uplift the local hill tribes and promote sustainable agriculture. The meticulously landscaped gardens and the amazing Royal Villa are must-visit spots for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

Singha Park

Singha Park is a great place to visit, especially if you are looking for peace and quiet. This expansive agricultural park has many tea plantations, paths to cycle on, and lovely viewpoints from which one can appreciate the scenery.

Unique Activities in Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai offers a host of activities that allow visitors to connect with the local culture and community.

Hill Tribe Visits

Chiang Rai is home to several indigenous hill tribes, such as the Akha, Karen, and Lahu. Visiting these villages offers a chance to learn about their customs, crafts, and unique way of life.

Night Bazaar

Chiang Rai’s Night Bazaar is a delight for the senses. Featuring handicrafts, souvenirs, and street food, this bazaar should definitely be among the top activities in Chiang Rai. It’s an excellent spot to sample local delicacies like khao soi (curry noodle soup) and sai ua (northern Thai sausage).

The Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge, is steeped in history and offers panoramic views of the Mekong River. A visit often includes the Hall of Opium Museum, which provides an outlook on the successful opium trade in the area. Those lodging at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort are in for a treat, as these locations are in proximity to the resort.

Culinary Delights of Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai offers a unique food experience. Its cuisine, with its bold flavours, local ingredients, and delectable taste, should be experienced by everyone.

Must-Try Dishes

Khao Soi: this is a creamy and spicy coconut curry noodle soup garnished with crispy fried noodles, lime, and pickled vegetables

Sai Ua (Northern Thai Sausage): Made with ground pork, herbs, and spices, these sausages are grilled to perfection and served with sticky rice or fresh vegetables.

Tips for Visiting Chiang Rai

November to February, when the cool season is upon the city, is the best time to explore outdoor activities. Usually, renting a vehicle (most likely a car or scooter) is a fast and easy way to explore the city at your own pace. When visiting temples and other landmarks, always be mindful to dress modestly. Ensure always to cover your shoulders and knees so as not to upset any locals or monks at the temple.
