Where to Ski on a Shoestring
Affordable Ski Vacation in Canada
Canada is home to some of the best ski slopes on earth, and the pull is strong to try to experience as many of the top runs as we can. But let’s be honest - skiing is expensive, and the prices seem to only be rising. Lift tickets, equipment, and sleeping and dining arrangements can all rack up quickly. But if you know where to look, there are still ways of experiencing freshly fallen powder without paying top dollar.
Here are some of the best-value ski regions in Canada.
1. Mont Orford, Quebec
Located in the beautiful Eastern Townships of Quebec, Mont Orford provides a fantastic bargain for value-conscious skiers. Lift tickets are significantly lower-priced than big-brand resorts like Mont Tremblant, and there are even more appealing discounts on weekdays. There are also plenty of inexpensive and quaint Airbnbs and lodges in the surrounding area. To top it all, the après-ski scene in neighboring Magog is a hidden gem not to be missed.
2. Ski Martock, Nova Scotia
For those of you from the Maritimes, Ski Martock is a bargain ski destination. It's not a big hill, but it is perfect for beginners or for someone who wants a low-priced and pleasant day on the slopes. Lift tickets and rentals are very cheap, and the small-town, hospitable environment means it's a fantastic destination. And, being only a short drive from Halifax, very convenient.
3. Manning Park, B.C.
British Columbia has famous ski resorts like Whistler, but if your finances can't quite afford such luxury, then drive on down to Manning Park. This hidden gem has fantastic powder, fewer tourists, and inexpensive sleeping arrangements, including hostels and cabins. Lift tickets are half the price of famous-name resorts, and the views of the surrounding peaks are every bit as lovely.
4. Apex Mountain, British Columbia
Another underrated B.C. ski spot, Apex Mountain Resort near Penticton has steep slopes, fantastic powder, and much fewer people compared with such heavy hitters as Sun Peaks and Big White. To top it off, there are also discounted ski-and-stay packages, lowering the overall expense of the excursion.
5. Castle Mountain, Alberta
Looking for tons of powder without paying the steep Banff rates? Castle Mountain is Alberta's best-kept secret. With some of the best powder in the province and significantly lower lift tickets compared with Lake Louise and Sunshine Village, it's a bargain. And, of course, it's only a short drive from Calgary, making it perfect for a Saturday excursion.
Tips for Budget Skiing in Canada
Ski midweek – If you can ski on a weekday instead of on weekends, there are discounts from most resorts.
Take advantage of student rates – If you're a student, watch for discounted lift tickets.
Book in advance – Pre-booking can also help in acquiring discounted tickets and stays.
Try night skiing – Some ski resorts also offer lower-priced evening tickets, which can be a money-saver.
Look for packages – Some resorts provide packages with lift tickets and stays, lowering the overall cost.
Skiing in Canada doesn't have to be too costly. With some planning and a commitment not to be tied up with the big resorts, you can ski on a shoestring. Enjoy your skiing! 🎿
