Ten Things I'm Glad I Did in Auckland
and One I Wish I Hadn't
Auckland is not only New Zealand's largest city, it's the gateway to New Zealand. It would be easy to write it off as just another big city and head straight for some of New Zealand's beautiful coastal towns. But on my recent visit, a two week work trip, I found 10 things that made my trip memorable, and one that was a waste of 1/2 a day.
1. Snowboarding at Snowplanet
Coming from Australia, where snowboarding is limited, Snowplanet was a revelation. This indoor snow park offers a unique opportunity to hit the slopes all year round. The terrain park makes it fun for more skilled riders, and it's the perfect place for beginners. Late night hours a bonus as I went after work.
2. Dinner Up the Sky Tower on a Clear Evening
The Sky Tower is an iconic part of Auckland's skyline, and dining there on a clear evening is a must. The panoramic views of the city and harbour are breathtaking, and the revolving restaurant makes for a magical dining experience. Watching the sunset from such a height is something I'll never forget.
3. A Trip to Tiritiri Matangi Island
Tiritiri Matangi Island is a wildlife sanctuary that offers a glimpse of New Zealand's natural heritage. Walking through the island's trails, surrounded by native birds and lush vegetation, was a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The island's commitment to conservation is truly inspiring.
4. A Trip to Waiheke Island
Waiheke Island, with its vineyards and beaches, was a highlight of my trip. A day spent wine tasting at the island's renowned wineries, followed by a relaxing afternoon on the beach, made for a perfect getaway. The island's laid-back vibe and stunning scenery were a treat.
5. Dining at Baduzzi Restaurant
Baduzzi, located in the Wynyard Quarter, offers a delightful dining experience with its Italian-inspired menu. The handmade pasta and innovative dishes were a culinary highlight. The restaurant's warm ambiance and excellent service made the meal even more enjoyable. Crayfish meatballs are my new favourite food!
6. Choosing a Hotel on the Waterfront

Staying at The Hotel Britomart on the waterfront was one of the best decisions I made. (On a previous visit I stayed near the airport; a mistake I'll not make twice). The location offered easy access to many of Auckland's attractions, and the views of the harbour were spectacular. The hotel was stunning.
7. Lunch in Mission Bay
Mission Bay, with its beachfront promenade and vibrant dining scene, is the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch. I enjoyed fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants while taking in the view of Rangitoto Island. The relaxed atmosphere and beautiful setting made it a memorable meal.
8. Visiting Piha Beach
Piha Beach, with its dramatic black sand and powerful surf, is a must-visit. The rugged beauty of the beach, set against the backdrop of Lion Rock, was awe-inspiring. Whether you're surfing, swimming, or just soaking in the scenery, Piha offers a quintessential New Zealand beach experience.
9. A Walk Up Mt Eden
Mt Eden, one of Auckland's many volcanic cones, offers panoramic views of the city. The walk to the summit is relatively easy and provides a unique perspective on Auckland's landscape. Standing at the top, looking down into the crater and out over the city, was a highlight of my trip.
10. The Ferry to Devonport and Sunset Walk on Mt Victoria
Taking the ferry to Devonport and walking up Mt Victoria at sunset was a magical experience. The charming village of Devonport, with its Victorian architecture and relaxed pace, is a delightful place to explore. The views from Mt Victoria at sunset were simply stunning, offering a perfect end to the day.
The One Thing I Wish I Hadn't Done: Visiting Motat
While most of my experiences in Auckland were fantastic, visiting the Museum of Transport and Technology (Motat) was a letdown. With so many other incredible things to see and do in Auckland, I wish I had spent my time elsewhere.
Auckland is a city that offers something for everyone, from adventure and nature to fine dining and cultural experiences. These highlights made my visit truly special, and I look forward to exploring even more of this vibrant city in the future.
