Split in January is like that cool, laid-back friend who always knows how to have a good time. The city is home to Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it’s brimming with history, charm, and a surprising amount of sunshine.
My adventure began at the palace, where I half-expected to see Roman soldiers marching through the streets. Instead, I was greeted by a group of friendly locals playing a game of picigin (a traditional Croatian ball game) on the nearby beach.
The palace itself was stunning, with its ancient walls, narrow alleys, and charming courtyards. I spent hours exploring the ruins, pretending to be an archaeologist, and taking way too many photos.
Next, I climbed the bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, which offers panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea. The climb was steep and slightly terrifying, but the views were worth every shaky step. I even spotted a few cruise ships in the distance, which made me grateful to be visiting in the off-season when the crowds are smaller and the prices are lower.
In the afternoon, I headed to the Riva, Split’s bustling waterfront promenade. The sun was shining, and the atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the mild winter weather. I stopped at a cafe for a cup of coffee and a slice of fritule, a local pastry that’s like a mini doughnut. It was warm, sweet, and absolutely delicious. I may have also bought a second one for the road. No regrets.
As the day ended, I headed back to the palace for dinner at a traditional konoba. I tried pasticada, a slow-cooked beef dish that’s served with gnocchi. It was rich, flavorful, and the perfect comfort food for a chilly winter evening. I washed it down with a glass of local red wine, which was smooth and delicious. By the end of the meal, I was warm, full, and slightly tipsy – the perfect way to end a day in Split.
Split in winter is a delightful mix of history, charm, and sunshine. The city’s laid-back vibe and stunning scenery make it a destination that’s both relaxing and entertaining. Just be sure to bring your appetite – the food here is amazing.
