A Few Walks And Pictures

The Weir At Settle Hydro On The Ribble

Introduction

Over the last two days, I have had walks to two watery places in Settle. I recently found out that water (lakes and rivers) is the entrance to the Welsh mythological Otherworld.

In Welsh mythology, one can reach the Otherworld (Annwfn) through various means, including entering through natural portals like certain lakes, burial mounds, or caves, particularly at specific times like May Day (Gwyl y Mabsant) or Samhain. Other methods involve being invited or led by an otherworldly being, often by following a ball of thread, or being found by a magical mist or unusual animals. A hero can also access the Otherworld by physically going deep underground, through a river or waterfall, or by crossing the sea.

But this is me in Settle.

Scaleber Foss

I have written several times about Scaleber Foss and you can check them out here:

This is always a challenge for me, as the first quarter of a mile is a one in five gradient, and then the next quarter of a mile is a one in eight gradient. While I think that is a challenge for anyone, the first time I did it I met two guys, older than me, riding up these gradients, so maybe I am just not fit enough.

After the gradient, the walk levels out, and I see the woods of the Foss and can hear the waterfall.

This is what I eventually see and take photographs in these wonderful natural surroundings.

These are the Instagram images and videos that I took on the walk.

Then my phone died, and just at that moment, a lady and her children were walking past, and we got chatting. I told her what I was doing, and my phone had died, and she offered me a lift back to Settle, which I gratefully took.

She told me she was a teacher in Settle, and her children were schooled in Settle, but they lived further out.

Then on to ...

The Ribble Weir And Settle Hydro Archimedes Screw

Again, I have written about these locations, but yesterday it had been raining hard, so I thought the Ribble would be up high. I wasn't disappointed.

The river and the Archimedes Screw at Settle Hydro were full on, and last night there was another storm, so the river may be evenhigher today when I walk to the Hoffman Kiln.

The Ribble Weir

I'll leave you with my Instagram Ribble Weir and Archimedes Screw pics and video.

The song is Bob Dylan's "Watching The River Flow".
