Quick Escapes: My Handpicked Weekend Getaways from Bangalore for Every Kind of Traveller
you're feeling drained or restless, don’t wait for a long holiday. Pick a place, pack a small bag, and just go.

Living in Bangalore has its perks—great weather, amazing food, and a buzzing tech scene. But let’s admit it, we all need a break from the chaos now and then. I’ve often found myself staring at my screen on a Friday evening, wondering, “Where can I go this weekend that won’t take forever to reach, but still feels like a complete change of scene?”
Over the years, I’ve discovered that some of the best travel memories don’t require long flights or huge budgets. All you need is a weekend, a few good playlists, and an open mind. Whether you're looking for adventure, peace, culture, or just fresh air, here's a roundup of my favourite weekend getaways from Bangalore, perfect for every type of traveller.
1. Nandi Hills – Sunrise Goals Just 60 km Away
If you’re craving a peaceful morning with epic views, Nandi Hills is a must. Located just about 1.5 hours from Bangalore, this hilltop retreat is perfect for an early morning ride or drive. I still remember my first sunrise here—standing above the clouds, sipping chai from a roadside stall, and watching the sky change colours.
It’s not just about the view, though. You can also explore the 18th-century Nandi Fort, Tipu Sultan’s summer palace, and hidden trails around the hills.
Best time to visit: Early mornings, especially between September and February for misty views.
Travel tip: Avoid weekends if you want to skip the crowd. Start early (by 4:30 AM) for the best sunrise experience.
2. Shivanasamudra Falls – Nature’s Thunder Just 130 km Away
Located around 3.5 hours from Bangalore, Shivanasamudra offers one of the most stunning waterfalls in Karnataka. The twin falls—Gaganachukki and Bharachukki—are absolutely majestic, especially after the monsoon.
I visited during late August and was blown away by the sheer force and beauty of the water. There’s something humbling about standing near a waterfall, isn’t there?
Nearby attractions: Talakadu (a historical temple town buried in sand) is just an hour away and worth a detour.
Safety tip: Stay behind the safety barricades. The rocks can be dangerously slippery during monsoons.
3. Chitradurga – Forts, Legends, and Windmills
This one’s for the history lovers. About 200 km from Bangalore, Chitradurga Fort is a massive stone structure with tunnels, secret passages, and stunning hilltop views. It’s a place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a different era.
I climbed through the ancient gateway arches and wandered through centuries-old walls—each corner whispering stories of warriors and kings. If you love photography or storytelling, this place is gold.
Best time to visit: October to February for comfortable weather.
Fun fact: The fort featured in several Kannada movies and was even a shooting location for The Myth, starring Jackie Chan.
4. Anthargange – A Night Trek You Won’t Forget
Ever tried trekking under the stars? Anthargange, located just 70 km from Bangalore near Kolar, is perfect for night treks and cave exploration. I went on a full moon night, and it felt almost surreal—climbing rocky trails with flashlights, then sitting around a campfire at the summit.
This is one of those trips where the journey is the real highlight. Ideal for groups of friends or solo travellers looking for a bit of thrill.
What to expect: Moderate trek (around 3–4 km), volcanic rock formations, and narrow cave trails.
Tips: Book with a local trek group. Most night treks include transport, guides, and even light snacks.
5. Skandagiri – Clouds Beneath Your Feet
Skandagiri, or Kalavara Durga, is just 70 km from Bangalore and offers one of the best sunrise treks in South India. I remember huffing and puffing through the early morning mist, only to be rewarded by an ocean of clouds from the top. It felt like standing on another planet.
The 8 km round-trip trek is moderately challenging but absolutely worth it. It's best done with friends and a torchlight!
When to go: October to February is ideal for clear views and cooler temperatures.
Permit alert: Trekking is allowed only with prior permission from the forest department or a certified guide.
6. Ramanagara – Of Rocks, Silence, and Sholay
Yes, this is the same rugged location where the iconic Bollywood film Sholay was shot! Located just 50 km from Bangalore, Ramanagara is a rock climber’s paradise and a peaceful retreat for those who love unique landscapes.
I went for a weekend rock-climbing workshop here and ended up falling in love with the dry terrain and the golden hour lighting over the hills.
Other things to do: Visit Janapada Loka (a cultural museum), go on a silk trail tour (Ramanagara is known for silk), or try rappelling with a local adventure company.
Best time to visit: November to March when the sun isn’t too harsh.
7. Kanakapura – A Green Getaway with Adventure Vibes
Kanakapura is often overlooked, but it’s just 60 km from Bangalore and makes for a fantastic weekend escape. With the Arkavati River flowing nearby and lush forests all around, it’s ideal for camping, kayaking, and nature walks.
I once stayed in a riverside eco-camp here and spent the day zip-lining, swimming, and just soaking up the quiet. It felt like a mini holiday without the travel stress.
Perfect for: Families, friend groups, and couples looking for soft adventure and relaxation.
Local tip: Many adventure camps offer weekend packages with food, stay, and activities—book ahead during peak season.
Wrapping Up: You Don’t Need to Go Far to Feel Free
What I’ve realised over the years is that the best weekend getaways from Bangalore aren’t just about where you go—they’re about how you feel when you’re there. Whether it’s the stillness of a sunrise on a hill, the roar of a waterfall, or the thrill of a midnight trek, these short trips have given me energy, clarity, and stories I’ll always remember.
So next time you're feeling drained or restless, don’t wait for a long holiday. Pick a place, pack a small bag, and just go. Sometimes, freedom is just a few hours away.
