The Western Ghats have a way of surprising even the most seasoned travelers with hidden gems, and the Netravati Trek is one such treasure. Tucked away near Ujire in Karnataka’s Chikmagalur district, this trail is a paradise for trekkers seeking solitude, raw beauty, and a close connection with nature. Unlike the popular treks of Kudremukh or Mullayanagiri, Netravati is still off the tourist radar, making it perfect for those who crave an unspoiled adventure.

The Allure of Netravati Peak

The Netravati Peak trek is a moderately challenging route spanning 12–14 km (round trip), offering a mix of dense forests, open grasslands, and sparkling streams. As you ascend, the scenery changes dramatically—from shaded trails with chirping birds to sweeping meadows with stunning views of the Netravati River valley.

What sets this trek apart is the serenity of the surroundings. There are moments when the trail feels untouched, as if you’re walking through a living postcard—clouds rolling over the hills, wildflowers scattered on the ground, and cool breezes carrying the scent of wet earth.

Best Time to Embark on the Trek

The post-monsoon and winter months (September to February) are the best time to visit Netravati Peak. During this period, the weather is pleasant, the trails are less slippery, and the lush greenery is at its peak.

Monsoon (June–August): The trail is full of life, with cascading streams and dense fog. But heavy rains bring challenges like leeches and muddy paths.

Summer (March–May): It’s warmer, but starting early in the morning helps avoid heat, and the views remain clear and rewarding.

How to Reach the Base of Netravati Trek

The trek usually begins from villages like Didupe or Niduvale, with Ujire serving as the nearest town for accommodations and transport.

From Bangalore: Drive or take an overnight bus to Dharmasthala (approx. 300 km) and hire a cab or jeep to Ujire.

By Air: The closest airport is Mangalore International Airport (about 100 km).

By Train: Mangalore Junction and Subrahmanya Road are the nearest railway stations.

Since public transport options to the trek’s base are limited, booking a cab or private jeep is the easiest way to reach the starting point.

Trekking Route and Suggested Itinerary

The Netravati trek is perfect for a 2-day trip, allowing you to enjoy the trail and explore the nearby attractions:

Day 1: Arrive at Ujire or Dharmasthala, check into a cozy homestay, and spend the evening visiting Dharmasthala Temple or Charmadi Ghat, both offering peaceful experiences.

Day 2: Start your trek early (around 6–7 AM). It usually takes 3–4 hours to reach the peak and about 2–3 hours to descend. Along the way, you’ll cross shaded forests, bubbling streams, and scenic hilltop meadows.

If you have an extra day, consider exploring Kudremukh National Park, Soormane Falls, or Bandaje Falls nearby.

Local Insights, Budget & Travel Tips

Guides: A local guide is strongly recommended since the trail is less marked and can be confusing.

Stay: Homestays in Ujire provide a warm Malnad-style experience, with hearty local dishes like neer dosa, akki rotti, and chicken curry.

Budget: A weekend trip from Bangalore can be planned within ₹3,000–₹5,000, including travel, accommodation, and guide fees.

Safety Tips: Wear sturdy trekking shoes, carry water, snacks, first-aid essentials, insect repellent, and rain gear. Mobile signals are weak on the trek, so plan accordingly.

Why Netravati Trek Deserves Your Attention

The Netravati Trek is more than just another trekking route—it’s an experience that combines natural beauty, solitude, and adventure. Standing at the peak, surrounded by rolling hills and drifting clouds, you’ll realize why this trek is loved by those who have discovered it. If you want to escape the usual trails and explore something raw, peaceful, and memorable, Netravati should be at the top of your list.
